GEMS World Academy (Singapore) is a co-educational international school located in the town of Yishun in the northeast corner of Singapore. The age range for the school is 2 to 18 years, owned by GEMS Education and offers all four International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes as well as Cambridge International Examinations (IGCSE).[1][2][3]

According to the school it focuses on all-round development, including language development and commitment to community and service.[4]

History[edit]

In 1959, two teachers, KS Varkey and his wife Mariama arrived in Dubai, which at the time was a burgeoning trade centre on the Arabian Gulf. GEMS Education was founded by their son, Sunny, in 2000 and has grown into an international company with schools and education services in more than 13 countries. GEMS World Academy (Singapore) was opened in September 2014 as the company's first school in Southeast Asia.

Facilities[edit]

The school occupies a five-hectare campus in the heart of Yishun, which is 25 minutes from Singapore City Centre. Facilities include[5] a state-of-the-art auditorium, art and music rooms, a contemporary design centre, an innovations suite, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, an all-weather sports field and two libraries containing over 27,000 books.[6][7]

Leadership Team[edit]

The school's leadership team[8] is made up of:

  • Richard Henry (Head of School)
  • Neil White (Principal, Primary Years)
  • Jan Stipek (Principal, Secondary Years)
  • Michael Gilmour (Deputy Principal, Primary Years)
  • Sean McAuley (Deputy Principal, Secondary Years)
  • Mark Petterson (Deputy Principal, Secondary Years)

Ownership[edit]

GEMS World Academy (Singapore) is privately owned by GEMS Education which is an international independent schools group. Founded in 2000, GEMS Education is a global advisory and educational management firm, and is the largest operator of kindergarten-to-grade-12 schools in the world, with as of 2015, a network of over 70 schools in over a dozen countries. GEMS provides pre-school, primary, and secondary education and has offices in the United Kingdom, the United States, Singapore, India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Kenya, and the United Arab Emirates.

Curriculum[edit]

GEMS is one of seven IB Schools in Singapore offering all three IB programmes.[9]

The GEMS Nursery programme (ages 2-3) is inspired by the principles of the Reggio Emilia teaching philosophy[10], which places the child at the centre of the learning journey with play-based learning.[11]

The Early Years programme (Pre-K to KG2) for ages 3-6 is designed to lay the foundations for a love of lifelong learning. The programme is driven by the beliefs and values of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) which is a leading curriculum framework for international primary education.[12]

The school's Primary Years programme (Grades 1 to 5) is for ages 6-11 and focuses on inquiry-based learning under the framework of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). Mathematics, Languages, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Music and Visual Art are taught through integrated units of inquiry. A STEM programme adopts an integrated approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.[13]

In the first five years of Secondary Years (Grades 6 to 10) is for ages 12-15 where students follow the IB Middle Years Programme (IB MYP). The MYP builds upon the strengths of the IB Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) and prepares students for future education. MYP students in Grades 9 and 10 at GEMS have the option of completing IGCSE examinations.[14]

In the final two years of Secondary Years (Grades 11 & 12) students embark on their IB Diploma Programme (IB DP), IB Career-related Programme (IB CP) or High School Diploma journey to prepare for life beyond school.[15]

International Schools in Singapore[edit]

There are more than 30 international schools in Singapore serving approximately 40,000 students (April 2015). These schools target mainly expatriates as Singaporeans need approval from the country's Ministry of Education to enrol at an international school.[16]

Fees for international schools are above SG$20,000 per year (April 2015).[16]

International schools follow different curricula, often dictated by their target nationality. Many follow the British, the IB and/or PYP/MYP systems while American and Australian schools, for instance, will follow the curriculum of their own country.[17][18]
