Ferran Guallar, born in Barcelona in 1968, is an economist, writer, and nature conservation activist who founded and directed the Jane Goodall Institute Spain for ten years.[1][2]

Activism and Conservation[edit]

Ferran Guallar founded and presided over the Jane Goodall Institute in Spain (IJGE) for ten years,[3][4] Europe, and West Africa in Senegal. Under his leadership, the IJGE pioneered the establishment of the Fouta Jallo Biological Station in the Dindefelo Community Nature Reserve in southeastern Senegal.[5][6] This station stands as the first center dedicated to the applied research and conservation of the western subspecies of the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus),[7] marking a significant milestone in the efforts to protect this endangered subspecies. Guallar established two protected areas in African: the Dindefelo Community Reserve[8] and the Goumbambere Reserve.[9] The project received support from the Barcelona Zoo.

Guallar's work was not limited to projects related to chimpanzee conservation. He participated in a study that documented the presence of the vulnerable species Genetta johnstoni in the Dindefelo Nature Reserve (Senegal). This discovery suggests that the species may inhabit certain mosaic habitats of forests and savannas.[10] He was involved in a project that demonstrated that the sustainable use of natural resources by local populations in Senegal benefits biodiversity and economic development while contributing to human well-being.[11]

Literary Work[edit]

Inspired by his conservation work with chimpanzees, Guallar wrote La parte salvaje (The Wild Within), a work of fiction published in Catalan by Editorial Empúries (ISBN 978-84-18-83358-8 Search this book on .) and in Spanish by Editorial Navona (ISBN 978-84-19-31115-3 Search this book on .). The novel has been described as "a dense but harmonious combination of plots and characters" and "a great psychological portrait".[3] Ferran Guallar is also a narrative writing teacher.[1]
