Life and career[edit]
Richard Adlam, better known under his artist name Fiasco,[1] is a British Record Producer, song writer, programmer and sample re-creator, whose most recent work can be found on releases by artists Lil Wayne, Taylor Swift, One Direction, Bruno Mars, Avicii, Jessie J and Iggy Azalea.[1][2] In 2016 his work could also be heard on music projects such as Desiigner's debut mixtape New English, Charli XCX's EP Vroom Vroom, Duke Dumont's I Got U as well as releases and projects by artists like Snakehips, Betsy, Bastille, Tinie Tempah, Cassius, DJ Fresh And Major Laser, Blonde, Aluna George, M.I.A, Ratboy, High Contrast, Kideko And George Kwali, Tiesto, Anton Powers, Gina G, Gotye and Common.[3][4][2]
2010 to present[edit]
Fiasco co-wrote and programmed on ‘This Means War’, from the Rizzle Kicks Album ‘Roaring 20's’,[1] as well as programming on albums by James Arthur and Ella Henderson.[5]
Because of his ability to quickly respond to the ever demands of sound construction he has emerged as one of the leading sample creators in the U.K time: with restraints being a critical factor in the music industry, he recalls the numerous projects being
"...very last minute. Part of my work involves sample recreation, and there was a load of vocals that needed re-doing for the Bruno Mars track Young Girls. I can remember having half a day to get the vocalist, record, mix and deliver as they were waiting to mix it in America!”[1]
Fiasco also worked on the Billboard 200 Number 1 and grammy nominated albums ‘Life Is Good’ by Nas and ‘Tha Carter‘ by Lil Wayne. He also worked on two singles by Willy Moon, ‘Yeah Yeah’ and ‘Railroad Track,’ as well as performing on Devlin’s collaboration with Ed Sheeran ‘Watchtower’.[2] Other notable programming work from 2013 included Cee Lo Green ‘I Want You’, Vato Gonzalez ‘Badman Riddim’ and Jessie J's ‘Mamma Knows Best’. He also programmed on 2011 albums by One Direction, Dot Rotten and singles by Steve Angello, Eric Prydz and Avicci.[6]
For Fiasco, such programming work and the utilisation of samples is
"about ideas and filling gaps in the mix. Sometimes it’s about adding more energy or adding sounds that are stronger. With jobs like Nas, I'm known for making retro sounds with real drums, which can be heard on the track 'Nasty". I work as one half of Replay Heaven[7] and we have a great close group of guitarists, brass and strings, so a lot of the time we get hired to do disco or funk, which sounds retro. I also have a great interest in classic old studios and the techniques that were used to make some of the great records.”[1]
Fiasco has also been involved in theatrical ventures, as part of the music production team to "Orchid - The Show", a pop-up theatrical experience that played in Miami in 2012.[8]
