Firdausul Hasan is an Indian film producer [2] in the Bengali Film industry. He is the founder of the film production house Friends Communication [3] [4] and has served multiple terms as the President of the Film Federation of India (FFI),[5] the apex body [6] of the Indian film industry. [7] [8] [9] [10] He is known for producing Bengali films like Aparajito, Padatik, Rupkatha Noy, Mayurakshi, Dictionary etc.
Career
Film Production
Firdausul Hasan is the founder with the Kolkata-based film production house Friends Communication.[11][12] In 2018, The Times of India identified Hasan as the producer of Mayurakshi while reporting on the National Film Awards ceremony controversy that year.[11] Firdausul Hasan produced Mayurakshi, which won the National Film Award for Best Bengali Feature Film.[13] During the 65th National Film Awards controversy, Hasan was noted in the media for his decision to personally receive the award on stage despite a boycott by other filmmakers.[14] As a producer his main focus is to make good films rather than just focusing on the film business. [15]
Hasan was also the producer of Dictionary, directed by Bratya Basu. In 2021, The Indian Express reported that the film had been removed from the Indian Panorama section of the International Film Festival of India after initially appearing on the selection list, and quoted Hasan in connection with requests to reconsider the decision.[12]
His 2022 film Aparajito, a tribute to Satyajit Ray, was both a critical and commercial success, winning multiple technical honors at the 70th National Film Awards [16].[17] His other notable productions include Mahananda (2022), Shesh Pata (2023), and the Mrinal Sen biopic Padatik (2024). [18] The film Aparajito completed more than 100 days in cinema halls. [19]
In 2023, Variety reported on Padatik, a Mrinal Sen centenary film directed by Srijit Mukherji and produced by Hasan, with Chanchal Chowdhury cast as Sen.[20] In 2025, The Telegraph described Hasan as a Calcutta-based producer of films including Padatik, Aparajito and Mayurakshi.[10]
Industry Leadership
Hasan has been elected President of the Film Federation of India (FFI) [21] for three tenures (2019, 2020, and 2024).[22] In this role, he has led Indian delegations to international film markets and advocated for the modernization of iconic Kolkata film studios at the Bengal Global Business Summit.[23]
In 2020 he launched 'Search for Stars' - an online platform for budding actors which is an FFI initiative. [24] In 2025, he launched 'CineKind',[25] an FFI initiative in collaboration with People for Animals to recognise humane storytelling and animal welfare in Indian cinema [26].[27] He also serves as the President of the Bengal Film and Television Chamber of Commerce (BFTCC) [28].[29]
He has also been involved in the FFI's selection process for India's official submission to the Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film. [30] [31] [32] [33] Firdausul Hasan was seen as one of the Jury members of the 'Best Film Friendly State' Award category in the 67th National Film Awards. [34]
Early Life and Education
Firdausul Hasan is an alumnus of St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, where he served as the General Secretary of the Students' Union (1991–92). He later became the Honorary Secretary of the St. Xavier's College Calcutta Alumni Association (SXCCAA),[35] [36] overseeing the expansion of its international chapters in cities like London, Dubai, and Singapore [37].[38] Outside of cinema, he is an entrepreneur in the education sector, managing polytechnic and B.Ed colleges in West Bengal.[37]
Film Federation of India
Hasan has served as president of the Film Federation of India. In 2024, The Times of India reported that Hasan had been elected president of the Film Federation of India for a third term, after earlier terms in 2019 and 2020.[9] The report stated that the Film Federation of India represents associations of producers, distributors, exhibitors and studio owners, and is involved in selecting India's official entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.[9]
In 2025, The Telegraph reported that Hasan, as Film Federation of India president, made a presentation at the Bengal Global Business Summit calling for the modernisation of old film studios in West Bengal, the creation of VFX and animation hubs, incentives for filmmaking and stronger government-private sector collaboration.[10] The report stated that Hasan proposed positioning Bengal as a film hub for eastern and northeastern India.[10]
Hasan has also been cited in media coverage of India's official submission process for the Academy Awards. In August 2025, The Economic Times quoted him on the Film Federation of India's process for inviting submissions for India's official entry to the Academy Awards.[39] In September 2025, The Telegraph reported that the Film Federation of India announced Homebound as India's official entry for the 98th Academy Awards, and quoted Hasan as FFI president on the jury's decision.[40] In 2024 He was invited to attend the BRICS and Moscow International Film Festival 2024 as an official delegate from India and as a state guest of Russia. [41]
Views on film production
At the International Film Festival of India in 2023, Hasan participated in a session on film financing with other producers and representatives from the National Film Development Corporation of India. The Times of India reported that the discussion covered the changing economics of film production, including OTT and satellite rights.[42]
