"Flamingo" is a song by English band Kero Kero Bonito. The song was originally released on 22 September 2014 through Ryan Hemsworth's SoundCloud compilation album shh#ffb6c1 (itself a part of Hemsworth's "Secret Songs" project).[1][2][3][4] Three days after its Souncloud debut, the track was also released through the Majestic Casual YouTube channel.[5]
"Flamingo" was written by Kero Kero Bonito band members Gus Lobban and Jamie Bulled. Musically, the song's soundscape includes a "whimsical flute and marimba" riff layered over "a simple and fresh drum [beat] and synths"[6]; Paul Lester of The Guardian described the track's sound as "the theme tune to the Clangers recreated by twisted computer gamers".[7] The lyrics to the song – which Sarah Bonito delivers in both English and Japanese[6] – discuss "inclusion, originality, and body pride",[8] using the coloring of a flamingo's feathers as part of a metaphor that celebrates genuineness and the collective experience.[6][9] Years after its release, the song received an unexpected boost in popularity in 2018 as a result of a TikTok meme.[10][11]
