Fleur de Son Classics is a classical independent record label based in New York, founded by classical guitar duo of Joanne Castellani and Michael Andriaccio in 1996. Since March 2011, the label has been distributed internationally by Naxos of America.[1][2] The catalogue consists of over 225 CD releases.

History[edit]

The classical guitar duo of Joanne Castellani and Michael Andriaccio [3] set up Fleur de Son Classics in 1996 with a focus on world première recordings and rarely recorded repertoire.[4] Fleur De Son Classics recording projects include chamber music, symphonic music, early music and solo repertoire.

Within the first few years of establishing the label, in 1998 and 1999, Fleur De Son Classics had 35 titles in the running for the Recording Academy's Grammy Nominations in various categories classical music categories.[1]

Their featured composers include Grammy Award-winning composer Michael Colina, Roberto Sierra,[5] George Crumb and Carl Vine. Roberto Sierra's Concerto Premieres includes première recordings of his Concierto Caribe for Flute and Orchestra, Of Discoveries for 2 Guitars and Orchestra, and Concierto Evocativo for Horn and Strings, performed with soloists: flautist Bonita Boyd, guitarists Joanne Castellani and Michael Andriaccio, and horn player Eric Ruske with the St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra of Lithuania, conducted by Arie Lipsky on Fleur de Son Classics. Michael Colina's requiem Requinauts: Return to Spirit for chorus and orchestra, featuring the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, conducted by Ira Levin, with mezzo-soprano Annie Gil and tenor Nicholas Mulroy, was released on Fleur de Son Classics in November 2014.[6]

Fleur de Son's rarely recorded music includes the works of women composers such as Rebecca Clarke, Betsy Jolas and Anne Weesner on the 2012 recording Short Stories – Works for viola and piano by violist Melia Watras and pianist Kimberly Russ[7][8] and the music of Lili Boulanger, Cécile Chaminade, Meredith Monk and Germaine Tailleferre on the 2018 recording Global Sirens by Canadian pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico.[9]

As Artistic Directors of the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition, presented by WNED-FM and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by music director JoAnn Falletta, Joanne Castellani and Michael Andriaccio record the prizewinners on Fleur de Son Classics. Since 2004, the winners of this guitar concerto competition, held in Buffalo every two years, have been Marcin Dylla, Pablo Garibay, Marco Sartor, Artyom Dervoed, Celil Kaya, Marko Topchii and Anton Baranov.[10]
