Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is a potential action-adventure stealth video game developed by Virtuos and published by Konami. It is a remake of the 2004 game of the same name, originally developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan (KCEJ) as the fifth main installment of the Metal Gear franchise, and as a prequel to the entire series. As with the original game, the narrative is set in 1964, 31 years prior the events of Metal Gear (1987) and follows a FOX operative codenamed Naked Snake, who must attempt to save a Russian rocket scientist and sabotage the activation of a nuclear-powered superweapon, while absolving his country from the suspicion of the Soviet Union amidst Cold War tensions and confronting his former mentor The Boss, who has defected to their side.

The remake of the game is the first major entry in the series since the release and negative reception of Metal Gear Survive (2018), which marked Konami's exit from publishing AAA console games and focusing on their arcade and mobile initiatives. The remake and Virtuos' involvement was first reported in October 2021 alongside other projects that were expected to pivot the publisher towards higher-budget titles.

Development[edit]

Background[edit]

The last numbered main entry in the Metal Gear franchise, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, was released in September 2015 to critical and commercial acclaim for its varied gameplay, open world design, graphical fidelity and mature themes.[1][2][3] The game's release followed a tumultuous development period, as it progressed in conjunction with an overall restructuring of publisher Konami's operations that would see them altered into a headquarters-controlled system that would help "establish a steadfast operating base capable of responding to the rapid market changes that surround our digital entertainment business".[4] Amidst the restructuring, an anonymous employee of the company relayed through news outlets that these efforts would also see Metal Gear franchise creator and director Hideo Kojima, alongside several senior studio staff members, leaving the company entirely following the lapsing of their respective contracts after the conclusion of The Phantom Pain's development.[5] The exit of Kojima and his team was largely attributed to an ongoing power struggle between himself and Konami's executives, who responded with hostility by depriving his development team of essential resources and demoting them to contractors as opposed to regular company employees.[6] By December 15 that year, Japanese publication Nikkei officially confirmed Kojima's departure from the company and the shuttering of his internal studio Kojima Productions. The company would be reformed as an independent developer almost immediately after its dissolution, soon commencing development on its own original titles beginning with Death Stranding, released in November 2019 as a game developed in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment.[7]

Less than a year following The Phantom Pain's launch and Kojima Productions' closure, Konami unveiled Metal Gear Survive, a spin-off title developed internally at the publisher without the involvement of the aforementioned studio or Kojima himself, and eventually released in February 2018. The game's existence drew a significantly negative response in part due to its association with the controversies surrounding Konami's restructuring and the arduous relationship fostered with Kojima Productions during the final year of The Phantom Pain's development. Ire was particularly directed towards the game's approach to the survival horror genre and themes, which were labeled as generic, with specific criticisms leveled against the derivative gameplay loop of fighting zombie-like enemies in single and multiplayer settings, the use of assets repurposed from Metal Gear Solid V, the requirement of an internet connection to play, reliance on microtransactions, and the general departure in tone and structure from previous Metal Gear games.[8][9][10][11] As of 2023, Konami's financial earnings reports have not listed Survive's total sales figures, contrasting both previous Metal Gear games and other titles published by them, with commentators interpreting this as indicative of the game's underperformance relative to Konami's expectations.[12][13]

Following Survive's launch, Konami Digital Entertainment CEO Hideki Hayakawa announced the company's intentions of largely pulling out of investing in the development and publishing of major AAA titles for consoles and PC, in favor of redirecting focus towards mobile gaming and their presence in arcades. Hayakawa remarked on this change in organizational structure as a result of the company's unwillingness to divide their gaming sector into seperate categories between console, PC and mobile, emphasizing that "Mobiles will take on the new role of linking the general public to the gaming world."[14] This decision was met with widespread backlash from the video gaming industry and community, who collectively derided this shift in corporate strategy for being tone deaf towards the existing player base and fanbase for the various franchises owned by the company that were conceived and popularized on these respective platforms, including Metal Gear, Silent Hill and Castlevania.[15][16][17]

Development[edit]

In October 2021, former Video Games Chronicle writer Andy Robinson reported that based on information offered by an anonymous source, Konami was in the process of rejuvenating their presence in the mainstream video game industry by refocusing on their premium game development efforts, including beginning production on multiple new projects in franchises that had been subsequently de-prioritized by the publisher in their transition towards arcade and mobile game ventures. In addition to the report discussing the company's plans to rejuvenate the Silent Hill and Castlevania franchises through the production of new projects outsourced to external development partners, Robinson also detailed Konami's plans to take a similar approach to producing a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004), which would be developed by Virtuos, an art production and game optimization studio largely known for their work on game conversions for modern platforms such as the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster from Square Enix, and various Nintendo Switch ports of eighth-generation titles.[18] Soon after the initial report broke, a user on Twitter shared a finding on the LinkedIn profile of a lead programmer at Virtuos, which listed a "AAA Action-Adventure Remake" as a project in their portfolio which they had been working on since 2018, and described as developed from the ground up for an unspecified 4K-capable platform, adding credence to their association with the reported Snake Eater remake.[19]
