Foundation Engine is a game engine created by American video game developer Crystal Dynamics. Its current name was adopted for use in Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, and subsequently in Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider[2].
It is a heavily modified version of Crystal Dynamics' previous engine, known as Crystal Engine, which was used for Tomb Raider (2013 video game), Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Tomb Raider: Legend, Tomb Raider: Anniversary and Tomb Raider: Underworld[3]
According to tech analysis of the engine as used in Rise of the Tomb Raider[4], it supports features such as TressFX (hair simulation), "realistic skin shading and rendering" based on motion capture, material effects, deformable snow, and pre-rendered fluid dynamics-based effects, such as avalanche.
