Francisco Mota Costa (born 16 February 2005) is a Portuguese professional handball player who plays as a right back. He is widely regarded as one of the top young talents in world handball and plays for Sporting CP.
Career
Coming from a handball family, he is the son of former players and coaches Cândida Mota and Ricardo Costa, and the brother of Martim Costa, Francisco Costa began his career in youth clubs before joining Sporting CP.
Major Achievements
- Best Young Player of the World: He was voted the Best Young Player of the 2025 World Handball Championship, an award given by the International Handball Federation (IHF). This is the first individual award of its kind won by a Portuguese handball player at a World Championship.[1]
- World Championship: His individual distinction was the culmination of a historic campaign for the Portuguese national team at the 2025 World Championship, where the team achieved its best-ever finish in fourth place.[2]
- Portuguese Young Athlete of the Year: In May 2025, he was named the Portuguese Young Athlete of the Year at the 28th Sports Gala, organized by the Portuguese Sports Confederation.[3]
- Club: With Sporting CP, he has won the national championship, the Portuguese Cup, and the Super Cup.
