Fritz Schwarz (born 29 April 1930 in Zurich) is a Swiss architect.

Biography[edit]

Fritz Schwarz began studying architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich in 1948. In 1953 he graduated with Hans Hofmann and William Dunkel. After that he was an employee of Ernst Schindler in Zurich. Fritz Schwarz then founded his own office in Zurich in 1955. In 1956 he began collaborating with fellow architect Hans Litz. In 1959 Schwarz traveled to Mexico and the USA for a year to experience a different architecture. In 1961 he married Liz Baumann. Liz and Fritz found the furniture store “Neumarkt 17” together in Zurich 1964. In the meantime Schwarz worked in Boston with the Architects Collaborative and in New York with Charles M. Goodman. He acted as secretary of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Städtebau. In 1995 Fritz Schwarz founded the Zurich architectural firm Schwarz & Schwarz Dipl. Architekten SIA together with his son Lucas Schwarz.

Memberships[edit]

In 1965 Schwarz was appointed to the Association of Swiss Architects. He provided impetus and encouraged the founding of the Architekturforum Zürich. From 1987 to 1992 Schwarz was its first president. He is a member of the Swiss Werkbund and the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects.
