Shlomo Ostersetzer (Hebrew: שלמה אוסטרזצר‎) (born January 15, 1928) is an Israeli engineer. Served as chief engineer of the Israel Aircraft Industries, founded TAT Technologies and served as its co-CEO for almost 40 years.[1]

Biography[edit]

Shlomo Ostersetzer was born in Duisburg, Germany, in 1928, as a single child to his parents, Shmuel Dov Ostersetzer and Henda (Hella) Ostersetzer of the Dorfler family. The family left Germany in 1933 after the rise of the Nazi party, and settled in Antwerp, Belgium, where his father taught at a Jewish School and later became its principle. With the Nazi invasion of Belgium in the Second World War, the family escaped to France, and later arrived in Switzerland. After the end of the war his parents returned to Belgium and he continued his studies at ETH Zurich,[1] receiving an MSc in Mechanical Engineering in 1953. He then worked for five years as an engineer at the Dutch company Fokker.

In 1958, he emigrated to Israel and joined the Israel Aircraft Industries. He became its Chief Engineer, a role he eventually handed over to Moshe Arens. He spent the years 1963-1969 in France as a member of the Israel Defense Ministry delegation. Towards the end of his period there, he worked at Intertechnique.

Following the French embargo on Israel in 1969, and at the urging of Moshe Kashti, Director General of Israel's Defense Ministry, Ostersetzer returned to Israel to help its developing defense industry, founding TAT Technologies together with Hyman Shamir.[2] The company produced heating and cooling devices for the aviation industry, and he has several registered patents.[3][4] The company's products have been installed on many aircraft, including the IAI Kfir fighter. Under his management, TAT has been listed on the NASDAQ American stock exchange since 1987 and joined the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange in 2005.[5]

He continued to run TAT Technologies as co-CEO, together with Dov Zeelim, until 2008, when he retired at the age of 80.

Ostersetzer is married to Esher (Etty) of the Zamir family, and they have three daughters.
