Verwurelter[1] or verwurrelter,[2] also known as fueskichelcher,[citation needed] is a traditional Luxembourgish pastry. The dish is a type of doughnut, and it is most commonly served during the Fuesent carnival season in Luxembourg.[1][2]
Ingredients, preparation, and serving[edit]
Ingredients include flour, milk, butter, eggs, and yeast.[1] The dough is formed into a knot, deep fried[3], and topped with powdered sugar or granulated sugar.[1][3] They can be served warm or cold.[1]
Etymology[edit]
The name is a shortened version of "Verwurrelt Gedanken", which in German means "scrambled thoughts", referring to the feelings inspired by attending carnival, according to the official portal of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.[2]
Fuesent[edit]
Fuesent, also known as Fuesecht, is a carnival season similar to Fasching that runs from the beginning of February and continues in some areas through the end of March.[1][2][4] It begins the day after the traditional celebration of Liichtmëssdaag, during which children, singing and carrying lanterns, go from door to door to get treats.[4]
Fuesent includes parades known as "cavalcades"; the first cavalcades were in Diekirch in 1870.[4]
