Gang Green were a short lived Onyx affiliated rap group that were around for a short period of time during the mid 1990s. The group consisted of Fredro Starr's younger brother Who$ane, X1 (March 6, 1979 - July 4, 2007), Chop, Sife and Still Livin’. They came with a similar hardcore and aggressive style to Onyx
Gang Green's debut single, I'll Murder You (1995), which featured Onyx and production from Fredro Starr, was criticized for its violence ("I'll murder you! With everything we got! Shot for shot we blowin' up your spot!"). In 1998 the group added two new members: Clay Da Raider and Sarusa The Cat. The name of the group was changed to Desert Storm before they disbanded in the same year.
Background[edit]
Who$ane (David Scruggs) met a friend called himself Chop, which at that time was part of the rap group, which included X1 (Bruce David Sandlin) and Dez (a.k.a. Still Livin') (Desmond Lee). So David joined the group, where later was added another member - Cyph Certified (Jimmie Squintin). The guys were rapping at the intersection of 131st Street & Rockaway Blvd (Queens, New York City) near the Kennedy Fried Chicken fast food restaurant.[1]
Since 1994, members of Onyx began to live in New Jersey, where they recorded their second album "All We Got Iz Us". In 1995, after a concert in New York, Onyx's members went to the intersection of 131st Street & Rockaway Blvd (Queens, New York City), where they met a rap group, and they immediately invited them to the studio, so it all started.[2] The name of the group "Gang Green" was created by Fredro Starr. They made the single "I'll Murder You". Then they made a remix with Onyx. The chorus from the song "I'll Murder You" was on the Onyx's second album "All We Got Iz Us". Who$ane's verse was also used by him before in the song Onyx "Shoot Stab Kill"[3], which was recorded for the album "All We Got Iz Us", but never got on it. In 1995 Onyx founded its own label Armee Records, distributed through MCA Records.[4] Contracts were signed with the artists: Gangreen, All City (Greg Valentine and J. Mega),[5] Panama P.I. and Choclatt (Jared Crawford).[6]
Gang Green on TV[edit]
Zodiac Fishgrease shot two videos for Gang Green and ONYX in two days: "I'll Murder You" (August 1, 1995)[7] and "Walk In New York" (August 2, 1995)[8]. The video "I'll Murder You" got play on Video Music Box, BET and other local stations. The group interviewed TV channels, including BET.[9]
Desert Storm[edit]
In 1998 the group added two new members: Clay Da Raider and Sarusa The Cat. The name of the group was changed to Desert Storm. All the music for them was produced by Self Service, who also produced 5 tracks from Onyx's third album "Shut 'Em Down" (1998). After the group Onyx left the label Def Jam Desert Storm disbanded in 1999 with each member continuing their solo careers.
X1 after Gang Green[edit]
After took part in the recording of Onyx's album "Shut 'Em Down" and touring with Onyx, X1 focused on his solo career leaving the Onyx camp but still on good terms with all of the members, which he later on helped them with their solo projects. In 2000 X1 signed to the label of Mike Tyson - Tyson Records. A year after that the label didn't quite take off the way X1 expected, so he then went and signed a new deal with California record company Ball'r Records, which had a roster consisting of three acts: Krayzie Bone, The Relativez and X1. The label ended folded before X1 could release some. Then X1 signed to the label Dynasty Records (based out of Las Vegas, Nevada) where he is do to release his debut album "Young, Rich And Gangsta" in the summer of 2006.[10] X1 was found dead by his wife at his house in Las Vegas on July 4, 2007. Social media tells that he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.[11] His girlfriend, fashion designer Angel Brinks, said that he committed suicide after Angel said something horrible to him.[12] "My son's father committed suicide when i was 9 months pregnant. I found him, and I couldn't really enjoy the birth of my son but mourn a loss of my husband at the time".[13] He was 28 years old.
Still Livin' after Gang Green[edit]
Still Livin' and X1 together took part in the filming of the video for the song "React" by Onyx, which also took part young rapper 50 Cent. After the tragic death of X1 (Bruce David Sandlin) in Las Vegas on July 4, 2007, his childhood friends in memory of him in 2008 established the hip-hop community/rap-group "Thirsty Foundation", consisting of $U (Sudan Smalls), Still Livin' and Rah (U'Illustrious Rah). They all come from South Ozone Park, and were members of the Lost Boyz, Back Streets and Gang Green groups. Later they were joined by Plush Litty. Now all members of this group live in Charlotte, North Carolina.[14] As a part of rap-group "Thirsty Foundation" Still Livin' released two mixtapes: "We On It (Vol. 1)" (2010) and "The Motion Picture" (2012). As a solo artist Still Livin' released two mixtapes: "Check Me Out Niggaz & Bitches Too!!!" (2010) and "L.I.T. (Livin In It)" (2017). In 2018, Still Livin' announced the release of a new mixtape "L.I.T. (Livin In It). Part II".
Who$ane after Gang Green[edit]
Since 1998 Who$ane began recording with other artists such as Ghetto Concept, Blaze, Star Mafia, Stack-A-Dollar (Dollamentary), Space Cadetz, Steven King (rapper) and others, but mostly he recorded his solo freestyles. Between the recording of music Who$ane been designing from jewelry, logos, rims, album & cd covers to clothing. Some of his works being featured in the hip-hop drama "Platinum (TV series)" (2003), in the documentary "BEEF" (2003), in the sitcom "Moesha" (1996-2000), in the video "Shut 'Em Down" by Onyx (1998), in the video "California Girls" by Fredro Starr (2003), in the video "Get It Up" by Sticky Fingaz (2000), as well as in the rap opera "A Day In The Life" (2009).[15] In 2008 Who$ane was a project manager of Onyx's compilation of 16 unreleased tracks "Cold Case Files Vol. 1".[16][17][18] In 2017 Who$ane teamed up with the Brooklyn rapper King Cakin (until 2016 also known as Yung Cakin from the group Kidd Cadetz) to release a mixtape "New Crack City", which included only 10 tracks, although both rappers recorded about 30 joint tracks.[19]. In 2017 Who$ane also teamed up with the Brooklyn rapper Bushwick Julz (X1 affiliate) to release the video "IDGAF". The video was filmed by The Infamous OZ (Angel OZ Navarro).[20]
