Garrett Lyndon Walsh is Canadian cardiovascular thoracic surgeon and medical educator known for his expertise in complex cancer surgeries of the lung, trachea, esophagus, and mediastinal organs including primary and metastatic tumors that may invade the spine. He is a professor of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas and an outspoken advocate for the importance of open surgical techniques[1]. He has over 300 publications including academic peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and editorials receiving more than 17,000 citations and an h-index of 75[2][3][4]. In addition, Dr. Walsh given over 600 lectures in numerous countries, and trained over 350 surgical residents and fellows[2][3][4]. Outside of his surgical practice and medical education, Dr. Walsh has an additional interest in designing hospitals and surgical operating rooms[1].
Early life and education[edit]
Born in Montréal, Québec, Canada, he attended Centennial Regional High School in Longueuil, Québec, Canada where he was class valedictorian and gold medalist[1]. Following high school, he completed his CÉGEP studies at Marianopolis College where he received a Science Entrance Award and earned a place on the Dean's List[1]. He completed a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Life Sciences at Queen's University in 1979 and subsequently completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 1983 also at Queen's University.
Postgraduate Training[edit]
Dr. Walsh completed his general surgery intern year at the University of Toronto before moving to McGill University in Montréal to complete his surgical training. He completed training in general surgery, cardiac and vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, and pediatric cardiac surgery during his time at McGill. His training was conducted at the Montreal General Hospital, Lakeshore General Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital. Garrett Walsh also completed a Master of Science (MS) in Experimental Surgery in 1988 where he published a thesis entitled Skeletal muscle powered cardiac assist under the supervision of Professor Ray Chu-Jeng Chu[5][6]. His surgical training was also completed with the notable Dr. David S. Mulder, a pioneer in Canadian surgery and trauma[7].

Career[edit]
In 1990, Dr. Garrett Walsh moved to Houston, Texas to start as a junior faculty member and work his way up to the level of a full professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center[8]. He earned full tenure in 2001 and continues to hold that role to the present day[8]. Dr. Walsh continues to provide surgical care to patients and remains a leading expert in advanced thoracic tumors that invade vascular structures requiring resection or reconstruction. He commonly coordinates complex surgeries with departments of neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery.
Advocate for the Importance of Open Surgery Techniques[edit]
At conferences around the world Garrett Walsh has advocated for the importance of maintaining open surgery education for surgical residents and emphasizes the importance of being proficient in open surgery. With the rise of minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Walsh claims that open surgery and minimally invasive approaches in thoracic surgery will improve together and both have a specific role to play in the treatment of patients[9].
