After initial piano and clarinet tuition in his native Burnley, Brunton started playing bass at age 15, inspired by Jean Jacques Burnel of the Stranglers. Encouraged by his father John Brunton, he discovered the world of jazz and started gigging in North West England. Languages studies brought him to University college of Swansea in 1986 and then on to Paris in 1988 where he enrolled in the renowned CIM jazz school https://www.lecim.com/ He studied classical double bass with Thierry Barbé at the Paris conservatory and had private tuition with Henri Texier, Pierre Michelot, Ray Brown, Gary Peacock and Dave Holland.
Career[edit]
Winner of soloist prize at French jazz competition La Défense in 1996[1]. After working with Edouard Ferlet quintet he formed Brunt'Off with Ferlet + Jean Charles Richard, Eric Löhrer, Frédéric Norel, Luc Isenmann. Concert at Radio France. Has toured and recorded with singer Sheila Jordan. In 2009 he formed Pee Bee, a large ensemble of 12 musicians. Tours with Laurent Guanzini in South Korea and with Japanese drummer Ichiro Onoe in China and Egypt. In 2017 he formed a new trio with Bojan Z and Simon Goubert. The first album "Night Bus" received a four star review in Down Beat[2] [3] and CHOC in French Jazz magazine. The follow up "Second Trip" was also awarded a CHOC and four stars in British JazzWise magazine. Selected as album of the week on FIP radio.
