Gemius is a Polish-based internet research agency, operating in over 30 countries of the EMEA region.[1][2] The company offers a variety of research solutions and analytical tools for internet audience research, establishing socio-demographic profiles of Internet users and measuring the effectiveness of digital ad campaigns.
History
Domestic Market
Gemius was founded in 1999 in Warsaw as Global eMarketing SA, which was dedicated to internet research.[3]
One year later, the website Ranking.pl was created, where data on the popularity of web browsers, operating systems catalogues, and search engines are published. The company's first commercial product was the GeMius system (later gemiusTraffic, currently gemiusPrism) – a system for website traffic measurement. Then, new tools were added: gemiusDirectEffect – measuring the effectiveness of online campaigns, and gemiusAdHoc – offering consumer studies tailored to individual client requirements.
In the following three years, Gemius developed a method for assessing the actual number of users who visit a website (real users), which was a breakthrough for the company. That same year – 2003 – the company Global eMarketing was renamed to Gemius.
In 2004, Gemius started cooperating with Polskie Badania Internetu (PBI) to deliver Megapanel PBI/Gemius[4] – monthly reports on the popularity of publishers and websites on the internet. Soon after, international expansion began.
2006 was the year when Gemius implemented an analytical tool called gemiusHeatMap. It illustrates the points on a website where internet users click most. Thanks to this solution, clients can study the behavior of visitors to a specific website.
In 2007, Gemius organized the first edition of the international web conference InternetCEE in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Three years later, in 2009, Gemius developed another analytical tool – gemiusPrism. It helps businesses analyze vast sets of information – big data.
In 2010, Gemius’ structure was reorganized – three parallel independent companies were separated: AdOcean (advanced adserver systems), Interactive Institute for Market Research (qualitative and quantitative marketing research), and Core Tech (development of IT projects).
In 2012, an agile software development methodology (SCRUM) was implemented, and the company started to create and develop its products accordingly.
The next analytical tool created by Gemius was called gemiusShopMonitor. It allows clients to compare the performance of their e-store with the results obtained by the competition. They could also contrast their website’s results with data for the entire industry.
Beginning in March 2016, the company introduced gemiusAdReal – a digital market research tool for all online ad campaigns conducted at a given time. As a result, clients can follow the steps of their competitors by looking at their digital media strategies. At the same time, Gemius started publishing its own internet audience measurement research in Poland – the new methodology included a new gemiusAudience methodology – Overnight. This new methodology allows for delivering data from the previous day.
The growth of the company was further boosted by the involvement of Trigon in 2008. The brokerage house acquired 100 per cent of Gemius shares.
International expansion
Central & Eastern Europe
The international expansion started in 2005 from Estonia, Lithuania, and Ukraine. Then, in 2006, Gemius broadened its operations by entering Latvia and Hungary. After that, Gemius decided to include Croatia, Slovenia, and Russia in its research. In 2008, the list of markets where Gemius operated was extended with Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The company also made its way to Belarus in 2009. In the following year, Gemius started researching Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2012, Moldova and Serbia were added. In 2013, the company launched its operations in the Macedonian, Romanian, and Kazakh markets.
Western Europe
In 2006, Gemius won a tender in Denmark, which became its first Western European market. In 2012, Gemius entered Portugal and in 2014, Belgium and Luxembourg.
MENA
In 2011, Gemius expanded outside Europe to Turkey and Israel. In 2013, Gemius, through various business partners, debuted in several Middle East and North Africa countries (MENA region).
