Georges Hanna Shakour, is a Lebanese Christian poet, born in 1935. He was born in “Shekhan”, “the town of two hundred books” in the city of Byblos in Lebanon, where he was born and raised in an old house next to an old church, in which he learned the teachings of Christianity and combined them with Islamic values ​​and teachings under a perennial oak tree, in the shadows of which he read Nahj al-Balagha, until rhetoric became an important approach in his life. In the shade of the oak tree, he read the Qur’an. He also inherited the love of literature and poetry from his illiterate mother who loved to write poems without knowing how to write. Shakour is married and is a father to three children: Liwa, Ghassan and Hala.

Education and Career

Shakour holds a Bachelor of Arts in Arabic literature. Throughout his life, he worked as a teacher. He was appointed head of the Arabic Language Department at the Middle East University in Lebanon and the Assistant Secretary General of the Union of Lebanese Writers. Shakour also published in many Lebanese newspapers and magazines, participated in many poetry evenings, and founded a cultural club in his village, Sheikhan.

George Shakour and the Arabic Language

George Shakour emphasized the importance of the Arabic language, especially for Muslims. He highlighted that it is the vessel of the Qur’an, in addition to its charm and brilliance, and the limitation of the number of its letters, and the conciseness of it its alphabet. He also created additional letters to become a universal alphabet. He also stressed the need to separate or differentiate between the language and the alphabet. George Shakour was acquainted with Arabic poetry from its beginnings in the Jahilyah (The Age of Ignorance) until its renaissance, and his luck was great because he knew the great Arab poets and writers. These poets and writers whom he befriended were Al-Akhtal Al-Saghir, the rural poet Rashid Salim Al-Khoury, Amin Nakhla, Paul Salama, Said Akl, Omar Abu Risha, Nizar Qabbani, Najib Jamal Al-Din, Abdul Karim Shams Al-Din, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Alayli, Ahmed Al-Safi Al-Najafi, Al-Jawahiri, and others.

Poetry in the life of George Shakour is a world of independent uniqueness with divine talent and sensuality. It is located in the private space between subjectivity and vision for poets to form an aesthetic structure that many admire, especially as it is one of the flows of this poet who inserted the Arabic H into poetic orbits. This gave him the title of the Three H’s poet: Hobb (Love), Hurriya (Freedom), and Hikma (Wisdom). This love is dedicated to his muse, a bride who lives in his imagination, a beautiful woman made up of all the beauty he sees. As for Hikma or wisdom, it certainly matured after a year, and he devoted a section of his poetry to it and to Hurriya or freedom, which are prominent in the collections of “Zahrat al-Jamaliya” and “The Epic of al-Husayn.” As for the poet, he is a unique creature with a delicate nervous system distinguished by his imagination, purity, sublime spirit, loving ideals, values ​​and humanity.
