Gessography (from the Greek: γύψος, white; γράφω, graphein 'to write') is a new kind of fine art, the world first crossover of intaglio, iconography, painting, and sculpture.[1]

Invention of gessography[edit]

Gessography was invented by a Ukrainian artist, Oleh Denysenko. It became the result of more than a decade of creative experiments in various genres.

Oleh Denysenko as a devoted etcher has been captivated by the idea of making an innovation in art for a log time; rejuvenating and reanimating printmaking, giving it special expression through color, volume, and spiritual depth of Byzantine icons.

Oleh Denysenko’s experiments in combining various art languages together were joined by his son Alexander Denysenko, a film director and visionary. He realized that Oleh Denysenko’s strong foundation in intaglio, his experience in sculpture, painting and his search for originality in the treatment of levkas is precisely what constitutes the basis of his genuine artistic identity, both of the keeper of tradition and innovator.

“When after a decade of my creative search, Oleh and I, we started working in a strong tandem, then, after several years of joint efforts, we attained the result I envisaged long before. I felt that that was really what I had been searching for a long time” — Oleh Denysenko[1]

Gessography as an artistic medium [edit]

Gessography, rooted in tradition and driven by innovation, in synergy of intaglio, iconography, painting, and sculpture.

Gessography allows creating numerous planes with glazed layers on relieved primer in sophisticated graphic manner rich in details and symbols. The sacral white background illuminates light that appears to come from inside and shapes the aerial perspective.

Gessography is a patented invention created in Ukraine; an intellectual legacy for the artists worldwide that represents Ukraine at the world art scene.

National premiere of gessography[edit]

The national premiere of gessography took place on the 15th of December 2020 in White World Modern Art Center in Kyiv. The exhibition was organized by Ukrainian Catholic University.[2][3]

Gessography as an instrument of social changes[edit]

With the help of gessography, Oleh and Alexander Denysenko aim to renew not only modern art but also the very idea of charity. For that reason, Gessography Exhibition had a charitable element to it.[2]

Oleh and Alexander Denysenko donated the largest 2-meter artwork "Melody of Hope" to the charity auction for the support of talented students of Ukrainian Catholic University. Also, part of the funds raised from the sale of each painting was passed to the scholarship for talented students of UCU.[2]

According to Andriy Kurochka, Head of Development Department of Ukrainian Catholic University, the example set by Oleh and Alexander Denysenko was a unique case of support for the university from the artists. “It was a sign of trust, love, and understanding of what the university does and tries to attain.”[4]

“We have a great ambition; to renew the understanding of charity. Many people see charity as sacrifice, but we tend to see it as an investment. After all, Ukrainian Catholic University brings up active people who see their mission in creating qualitative changes in our life. We have to learn to make our own benefits and interests serve the common good. Social need have outrun the selfish ones. Today is the day when we find our creative Self by doing good to the society together”, says Alexander Denysenko.[4][1]
