Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan (born 28 February 1966) is a Hindustani classical music and Ghazal vocalist from India. He comes from Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana. Khayal & Tarana, Thumri, Dadra, Ghazal, Bhajans & Sufi.

Early life[edit]

Khan was born in Kanpur to a family of Hindustani classical musicians known as Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana. He received his early training from his grandfather, the Sarangi player Ustad Ghulam Jafar Khan, and later on from his father, the classical vocalist and Padmashri awardee Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan.

Career[edit]

Khan started his career at the age of 17 when he started singing classical vocals with his father. He also started singing Ghazal in different youth festivals at the University of Delhi where he won over 100 prizes in inter-college and inter-university music competitions. In 1985 he started performing professionally in India and abroad. He performed in Hindustani classical festivals like Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Yadgar Sabha, Rag Rang Festival, Silsila Festival and Sangeet Natak Akademi concerts. In 2007 he performed at Rashtrapati Bhavan for the President of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.

In Ghazal singing he performed in many prestigious concerts globally like ‘Ghalib Rang’ based on the poetic work of Mirza Ghalib, ‘Sheeshon ka Maseeha’ based on poetic work of Faiz Ahmad Faiz ‘Naya Shiwala’ based on the poetic work of Allama Iqbal ‘Khazana Ghazal Festival’ etc. He has numerous recordings on Doordarshan, Zee TV and Insync Television Networks.

He has composed music for Bollywood films Ek Tha Dil Ek Thi Dhadkan and Jana let’s fall in love. He composed Ghazal albums for Pankaj Udhas, Hariharan, Jaspinder Narula and Suresh Wadkar.

His compositions include the raga Mohini Bhairav.

He has released more than 15 albums in the Hindustani classical vocal tradition. (Khayal), Thumri, Dadra, Ghazal, Bhajans and Sufi genres on the Times Music, Nupur Audio, Sagarika, Mystica Music[1] record labels.

Touring[edit]

He has performed in more than 25 countries including U.S.A, U.K, Australia, Japan, Netherlands, France, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, New Zealand, Bhutan, Mauritius, Saudi Arabia, Oman, U.A.E, Turkey, Thailand and Afghanistan. He has given more than 400 concerts globally.

Awards[edit]

  • In 2009, Khan received the Senior Fellowship Award from Ministry of Culture of India for his research on Hindustani Classical Music.
  • In 2017 he received a Global Achievement Award for his contribution in Hindustani Classical Music.
  • In 2018 he received the Dr. Radhakrishnan Award for his contribution in Hindustani Classical Music as a Guru.
  • In 2018 he received the Mahatma Gandhi Legacy International Award.[2]
