In 1989 he was admitted to the 3rd cycle of the PhD in "Biological Markers of Tumors of the Gastrointestinal Tract". He obtained the PhD title on June 8, 1992 with a thesis on "Clinical evaluation of tumor markers in hepatic neoplasms, with particular study of the application of de-gamma-carboxyprothrombin".[2]

In August 1992 he was hired by the University of Bologna, initially as a graduate technician and then as a researcher. With this role he began working as a surgeon within the Policlinico Sant'Orsola-Malpighi, initially in the Surgery Clinic II, directed by Prof. Giuseppe Gozzetti, and subsequently with Prof. Alighieri Mazziotti and then with Prof. Antonio Daniele Pinna.

In his career as a surgeon, he has personally performed more than 1200 liver resections, more than 160 Whipple procedures and 288 liver transplants. On 9 April 1986 he took part in the first liver transplant performed at the University of Bologna.[3]

The most appreciated scientific work was published in July 2001. It was the demonstration that the results of liver resections had improved since their introduction in the clinical field and these improvements gave the procedure a superior added value.[4]

In Bologna, in August 2008, he took part in one of the rare multi-organ transplants performed in the world, participating in the simultaneous heart, liver and kidney transplant.[5]

In the months of May-June 2010 he participated in the television series 'Transplants. Fates Crossed'', which was a docu-fiction broadcast by Fox Life[6]

On 1 June 2010 he was appointed chief of the HepatoBilioPancreatic Surgery Unit of the National Cancer Institute "Regina Elena" IRCCS, in Rome[7]

In March 2021 he performed one of the first minimally invasive right hepatectomies using the “Da Vinci” surgical robot in Italy and the first in the Lazio Region, removing a large liver adenoma in a 22-year-old young woman.[8]

The most recent interest concerns the execution of robotic resective liver surgery[9]

Research and Scientific activities[edit]

From June 2010 until 2016 he was "member-at-large" of the board of the international scientific society "European-African Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association" (E-AHPBA)[10]. The primary mission of the Association is to be the leading interdisciplinary organization for HPB surgical science and education in the region and to provide an international forum to showcase developments and cutting-edge science in HPB surgery

This website has more than 1000 unique visitors daily.[22]

The site's early activity was thoroughly analyzed and published in the scientific journal Archives of Surgery (today Jama Surgery)[23]

In addition to the section dedicated more specifically to clinical activity which is aimed at patients and their doctors, the website also offers a section for hepatobiliopancreatic surgeons, with an extensive review of the history of liver surgery[24] and a vast library of scientific works cover the main aspects of surgery of the liver, pancreas and biliary tract.[25]
