Jasmeet Singh Ahluwalia is an Indian bariatric surgeon and laparoscopic surgeon. He is the Head of Bariatrics and Laparoscopic surgery branch at Star Super-speciality Hospital[1] Jalandhar, Punjab, India.

Early life[edit]

Jasmeet Singh Ahluwalia finished his 10th grade from St. Joseph's School, Phagwara and 12th grade in medical field from Apeejay School, Jalandhar. Then he did his MBBS and MS in Surgery from Government Medical College, Patiala. where his father was posted at that time. He developed keen interest in laparoscopic surgery during his training and soon after in 2010 he joined GEM Hospital , Coimbatore for his Fellowship of National Board in Minimal Access Surgery under Dr. Palanivelu C. who is widely regarded as one of the key pioneers of laparoscopic surgery in world. During his stay, he developed keen interest in bariatric and metabolic surgeries which help patients to lose weight and get rid of diabetes.

He met Dr. C K Huang in 2011 in a congress at Coimbatore and expressed his desire to train under him at Taiwan to progress further into this field of his interest[2]. In 2013 he was accepted for fellowship in Bariatric and metabolic surgery at E-Da Hospital, Kaohsiung, Taiwan under C K Huang. After finishing his studies he moved back to his native place, Jalandhar.

After working for various hospitals as bariatric and advanced laparoscopic surgeon, on June 03, 2019, he headed department of bariatric and advanced laparoscopic surgery in Jalandhar, Punjab, India[3] at "Star Super speciality Hospital", offering weight loss procedures and advanced key hole surgeries for diseases like hiatus hernia, achalasia cardia, gynaecology surgeries. Some of these procedures were rarely performed before in this region and patients had to travel to another cities. Now patients visits to his hospital from all over north India to avail such facilities.

Career[edit]

Jasmeet Singh Ahluwalia was born in a small town of Punjab province of India, Phagwara, on 31st January 1979. On Jun 03, 2019 Jasmeet Singh Ahluwalia was appointed as Head of bariatric and advanced laparoscopic surgery at Star Super speciality Hospital, Jalandhar.

On Jul 05, 2019 during a press conference Jasmeet Singh Ahluwalia said: “All types of hernia can be operated with keyhole method, not only it leads to small scar and a quick recovery, but the chances of hernia coming back are less, as, in this method, a large mesh is placed inside the body. This technique is like putting a puncture on a tyre from inside, instead of usual outside.[4]

On Jan 18, 2020 Jasmeet Singh Ahluwalia organised an event where post bariatric surgery patients walked the ramp in style and proved that how bariatric surgery has changed their lives.[5] This was very well recognised by people suffering from obesity.

Jan 31, 2020 Dr Jasmeet Singh Ahluwalia was elected as secretary of the association of surgeons of India Jalandhar chapter and held its first meet which was followed by many other in following months and years.[6]

In 2021, Star Super speciality started offering Laser facility for treatment of piles, fissure, fistula, pilonidal sinus and varicose veins which has been very well accepted by people. (News by Daily hunt)

Research and publications[edit]

  • Jasmeet Singh Ahluwalia conducted a research study on handling chronic pancreatitis, primarily controlled with drugs. But in some patients, surgery needs to be performed. Patients with dilated primary pancreatic duct usually prefer the Partington method. However, in the year 2011, by executing the first laparo-endoscopic single-site lateral pancreatojejunostomy (LPJ) on a 32-year-old female who was diagnosed with chronic calcific pancreatitis. The study found that the LPG procedure is safe and viable in surgeries only if performed by an experienced laparoscopic surgeon.[7]
  • Jasmeet Singh Ahluwalia publishes a research paper on Single incision multi-trocar hepatic cyst excision with partial splenectomy. The first Laparo-endoscopic single-site hepatic cyst excision with partial splenectomy for hydatid cyst in the liver and spleen was reported in a research paper, performed using traditional laparoscopic instruments.[8]
