Gilro is an Israeli manufacturer and distributor of wafers, ice cream cones, and cake decorations, founded in Jerusalem in 1950 by the Gelbard family, and currently located in Beit Shemesh.[1][2][3][4][5]
History[edit]
Yosef Gelbard founded the company with his brother and brother-in-law, and the three decided to establish a factory for the production of ice cream cones. The chosen name for the factory was Gilro, an incorporation of the Gelbard and Rosenman names. The factory was initially erected in the Romema quarter of Jerusalem. In the 1950s, the factory operated under the austerity regime imposed in Israel, producing ice cream cones for the local market only, using rationed quantities of flour and oil. In 1973 the factory moved to Giv'at Sha'ul.[6][4]
In 1988 the company was re-established in Beit Shemesh under the management of Avi Gelbard. The factory has 17 production lines. By adopting automation processes, the factory's production floor is computer-controlled. Ice cream cones it produces are distributed in Israel and abroad[7] to Nestlé, Unilever, McDonald's, Osem and Shufersal.
In addition to classic wafers, Gilro manufactures Belgian leaf wafers.
In 2006, Filro purchased Ugrafix, a company that manufactures and distributes edible sheets and edible ink that enable printing via regular printers.
In 2016, Gilro purchased Cake Art, a Dutch cake decorations factory.[citation needed]
Gilro's products have Kosher certification from Badatz Eda Haredit Jerusalem (Orthodox Council of Jerusalem), as well as GMP, ISO, and HACCP certifications. The company is a member of the international Private Label Manufacturer's Association (PLMA).
