Girls' Frontline (simplified Chinese: 少女前线; traditional Chinese: 少女前線) is a mobile strategy game developed by MICA Team, a Chinese company. It is a moe anthropomorphism game in which the player controls echelons of android characters, known in-game as "T-Dolls" or "Tactical Dolls", each of which represents a real-world firearm. The game was released in Mainland China on 20 May 2016, and in Hong Kong and Taiwan on 18 January 2017. It was also released in South Korea on 30 June 2017. SUNBORN Network Technology published and released both the English and Japanese version on May 8, 2018 and August 1, 2018 respectively with the Japanese version under the title Dolls Frontline due the Girls' Frontline IP trademark being held by a copyright troll.

This game is a prequel of another game developed by the same company called Codename: Bakery Girl.

Gameplay

Overall, the game revolves around assembling squads of T-Dolls, known as echelons, and sending them into battle to fight SF. As noted above, each of the characters are female moe anthropomorphisms of real-world firearms (eg. Vector being a KRISS Vector, Gr G3 being a HK G3 or Spitfire being a JSP Spitfire). The player plays as a newly recruited commander of an area who commands the T-Dolls in battle, and organises the echelons as well as the T-Dolls' wellbeing. Battles are a mix of turn-based strategy puzzles on a set map with enemies that can move about, random item nodes and heliports/command nodes, from which the player can summon their own echelons, or support echelons, which are echelons that the player's friend sets on their profile to be used by others, and real-time battles with enemy echelons. Battles are for the most part automated, although the player can activate the T-Dolls' special abilities manually if wanted, or order them to different spots in formation (which the player can organise out of battle to be set as the default formation when entering a battle) or to withdraw in order to conserve health or resources). Players also have the option of withdrawing specific echelons from the mission altogether if they wish. Gameplay progresses by playing on the campaign missions, logistic support missions, or combat simulations to level up each T-Doll. The game also features gacha elements, such as in the production and heavy production of T-Dolls and equipment, or in the Dormitory with costumes and furniture sets for the T-Dolls on a time-limited basis with several sets and costumes being available for a limited time, before another few sets and costumes are revealed and added. After a while, old costumes from previous gacha events will be added to the "Black Card" store, where players can exchange an amount of Black Cards (obtained from gifting T-Dolls a duplicate costume that has already been gifted before) for a costume of a previous gacha set. Players can customise their dorms with furniture, and interact with Chibi renditions of the T-Dolls in the echelon corresponding with that dorm. They can also gift the T-Dolls food and costume, which raises the affection of the T-Dolls. Affection is also gained from success in battle, and is lost when the T-Dolls die (unless it is a boss battle) or when another T-Doll in the same echelon dies.

Plot

In the early 20th century, ruins of an advanced alien race called the "Precursors" was discovered in Russia. Due to the advanced nature of the technology, the US and USSR began searching across the globe for more Precursor ruins in order to study their technology. In 2032, the "North Island Incident" occurred, wherein a Precursor facility began leaking "Collapse Fluid", a highly radioactive substance that causes mutations in human DNA, causing a disease known as "Euroky Low-Emission Infectious Disease" (ELID). In an attempt to stop the outbreak, and reduce leakage, a security team was tasked with destroying the facility's entrance, however the explosion ruptured tanks filled with more Collapse Fluid, ironically spreading the substance further and into the atmosphere, where trade winds and air currents proceeded to spread it across the planet. Chaos quickly ensued throughout the world, and millions of people were killed or horrifically mutated and land contaminated by the fluid became uninhabitable, causing a large influx of refugees and forcing the surviving nations to find habitable land and resources. These problems led to tensions amongst the surviving nations, ultimately leading to a World War III that lasted from 2045 to 2051.

At the same time, AI and robotic technology advanced greatly and with the need of manpower due to heavy losses caused by the Collapse Fluid spread, androids began taking over many facets of industry which led to the creation of "Autonomous Dolls", or A-Dolls in 2035, which were androids with advanced AI and superior strength that look similar to humans and are capable of expressing emotions, and later T-Dolls in 2037, which were A-Dolls with combat software installed. With many nations unable to provide local security and protection for the populace, private military corporations began employing T-Dolls and took over the role of the military and police in many nations, wherein they profited greatly, especially during WW3, and the two biggest PMCs, Sangvis Ferri and Grifon & Kryuger, emerged as a result.

However, in 2062, Sangvis Ferri's AI, their T-Dolls and robots suddenly rebelled, killing their human masters and began conquering nearby nations. In response, Grifon & Kryuger were hired to stop Sangvis forces invading other nations and to contain and eliminate them. The player takes the role of a recently promoted G&K Commander as they battle Sangvis Ferri forces. While the game's story deals with the war between G&K and SF, it also focuses on other characters, such as the AR (Anti-Rain) Team, G&K's SOF T-Doll echelon and 404 Squad, G&K's Black Ops T-Doll echelon.

Crossover Collaboration

The game has several collaboration with other game companies. On September 4th, 2018, the PS4 rhythm game, DJMax Respect featured three songs from Girls' Frontline as DLC.

On November 9th, 2018, Girls' Frontline announced a crossover event with Arc System Works on November 20th where Noel Vermillion and Elphelt Valentine from BlazBlue and Guilty Gear respectively would appear in the game as recruitable allies.

On January 11th, 2019, Sukeban Games announced their anime cyberpunk visual novel, VA-11 HALL-A, will be getting a collaboration with Girls’ Frontline.
