Idle Miner Tycoon is a free-to-play video game developed and published by Kolibri Games. It was first released as a mobile game for Android and iOS in 2016. In March 2022, the game was released as a cloud game on Facebook.[1]

The goal in Idle Miner Tycoon is to build a mining empire by automating workflow within a mine. Idle Miner Tycoon combines gameplay of idle games and tycoon games.[2]

In 2016, the game generated revenues of € 430k.[3][4] In 2018, the revenue was € 43 million.[5]

The game received over 100 million downloads.[6]

Gameplay[edit]

The core gameplay consists of managing tasks of mine workers. In the beginning, this is done manually through the player. In the first mine consisting of coal, the player instructs mine workers to execute their respective tasks, meaning the coal must be mined in their respective shafts, then transported via an elevator to the top of the mine and, lastly, converted into in-game revenue in a warehouse. Once the mine workers have generated revenue, it is possible to hire managers to automate the workflow. Any automated workflow continues to generate revenue while the player is actively playing but also while the player is offline. Players can buy upgrades, boosts, and mystery boxes to progress faster. The purpose of the game is to deploy resources, make investments and optimize the management within a mine and throughout different mines to generate revenue.

Idle Miner Tycoon also has event mines that consist of changing themes and are available for a limited time. By completing specific objectives within an event mine, the player can earn rewards, such as boosts, skillpoints, and super cash for use in the regular mines. The event mines covered more than 150 themes, such as Christmas, Dinosaur, Pizza, Flower, Pirate, and Retro.

The game has been updated in short cycles, leading to 50 updates per year.[7][8][9]

[edit]

Idle Miner Tycoon has been named as one of the first mobile games to display rewarded ads[10]. Rewarded ads are advertisement clips that players can watch to receive rewards[11]. In Idle Miner Tycoon, players receive a boost by watching an advertisement. On average, players watch 8 to 9 ads per day in Idle Miner Tycoon.[12] This leads to revenue from advertisements accounting for 50% of Idle Miner Tycoon’s revenue.[10][5]

In addition, Idle Miner Tycoon was one of the first games to introduce playable ads for their user acquisition.[13][12] Playable ads give players the possibility to test a game directly, without a need to download the game.[12]

Reception[edit]

Idle Miner Tycoon has a rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.[14][15][16]

In addition, Idle Miner Tycoon has led to prices and awards, including: The Red Herring 2018 Europe[17] and Red Herring 2018 Global[18] Award, an award that honors the growth and innovation of technology companies and startups[19], and the Deloitte Fast 50 Germany award, where Kolibri Games was awarded for revenue growth of 12,310.45% between 2016 and 2019, mainly driven by Idle Miner Tycoon.[20]

In June 2022, Idle Miner Tycoon was ranked #1 in the top 10 list of the most successful idle tycoon games of all time, which also include the games Egg Inc. and AdVenture Capitalist.[21]

Controversy[edit]

Following Idle Miner Tycoon, many developers built games in the idle tycoon genre[22], using similar names for their games, e.g. Idle Supermarket Tycoon[23], Idle School Tycoon[24] and Idle Startup Tycoon[25]. Consequently, in 2019, Kolibri Games sent out cease and desist letters to several developers that use the ”Idle xxx Tycoon” structure in their name, claiming that the other game’s name is likely to cause confusion about Kolibri Games‘ portfolio games like Idle Miner Tycoon. This has caused several discussions about the morality of the publisher of Idle Miner Tycoon.[26][27]

On August 29, 2019, Kolibri Games registered the trademark “idle tycoon”[28], causing criticism among gaming experts about monopolization of organic user traffic.[26]

Sequels[edit]

In November 2017 (iOS) and March 2018 (Android), a sequel with the title Idle Factory Tycoon was launched by Kolibri Games. Idle Factory Tycoon has a similar design and kept Idle Miner Tycoon's characters as the main characters. However, the environment changed from a mine to a factory and the gameplay slightly differs from Idle Miner Tycoon. For example, in Idle Factory Tycoon, the player can choose which raw materials will be used for production and optimize the production efficiency.

In the following years, various sequels have been released, such as Idle Farm Tycoon (2020), Idle Pirate Tycoon (2020), Idle Restaurant Tycoon (2020), Idle Firefighter Tycoon (2021), Idle School Tycoon (2021) each with a different setting and slightly different gameplay.[29] In 2021, these sequels generated 20% of Kolibri Games‘ revenue.[5]
