Glitch Productions is an Australian computer animation studio headquartered in Sydney, New South Wales. The company is known for their hand in progressing the outreach of Australia's smaller animation industry with shows such as SMG4 and Meta Runner, as well as producing shows such as Murder Drones and The Amazing Digital Circus.[1][2][3] The company was also featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Media, Marketing, and Advertising in 2023.[4]
History[edit]
On May 7, 2011, Luke Lerdwichagul created his first YouTube channel, SMG4, at the age of 13. The content featured on the channel often focuses on animated bloopers surrounding Super Mario and other characters across video games and the internet. Around 2016, Luke's older brother, Kevin Lerdwichagul, who had observed the channel and its wide audience, saw the potential to form a business around the channel, later joining on the series as a full-time writer, while Luke took on a directing role.[5][1] As of November 2023, the channel has 7.44 million subscribers.
On May 24, 2017, Luke released a fan mail video to the SMG4 channel, where he briefly mentioned that a company, dubbed Glitchy Boy, was created to represent his channels SMG4, Hobo Bros., and TheAwesomeMario.[6] On September 5, 2018, a formal direct was released on the same channel, where Luke and Kevin fully explained the concept of Glitchy Boy, now rebranded as Glitch Productions. In the same direct they also unveiled Hitbox, a live-action series involving Luke and Kevin acting as various Nintendo characters.[7]
On December 5, 2018, Glitch released the trailer for Meta Runner, an animated e-sports anime which would release to the SMG4 channel on July 16, 2019.[8][9] The series, funded by Screen Australia, became the top-performing online investment from the company, racking up 10 million viewers across its first season.[2] The first season was also financed with support from Crunchyroll and AMD,[10] and financed in association with Epic Games.[10][11] On April 20, 2020, Screen Australia announced that they would be funding a second season of Meta Runner.[12]
On August 27, 2020, Glitch Productions moved their operations to their own official YouTube channel,[13] though SMG4 and Hobo Bros. would continue airing on their own channels. The first major release on this new channel was the pilot for a Meta Runner spin-off titled Ultra Jump Mania!, which premiered on September 4, 2021.[14] The pilot however, was not picked up for a full season. Shortly after, the second season of Meta Runner premiered on October 16, 2021.[15]
On March 12, 2021, Glitch Productions unveiled Sunset Paradise, an SMG4 spin-off centered on Meggy Spletzer, which released its pilot on March 26, 2021.[16] On May 12, the series recieved online production funding from Screen Australia.[17] On October 9, it was announced that Glitch would be releasing the pilot for another series, titled Murder Drones, on October 29, 2021.[18]
In 2023, Glitch announced that they would be hosting GlitchX, an indie animation expo, on November 9.[3] Ahead of the convention, Glitch Productions released the pilot for The Amazing Digital Circus, a series created in collaboration with Gooseworx, on October 13.[19][20]
