Godless Wicked Creeps were a Danish psychobilly band formed in 1993. The group is distinguished by a unique energetic sound and "wild" performances, thanks to which it has a reputation as one of the most "classic" psychobilly bands.[1] They played a central role in starting the third international wave of psychobilly. The band claims The Cramps as a major inspiration to their musical style.[2]
History[edit]
Godless Wicked Creeps was founded in 1993.[3] It included Dax Dragster on vocals and guitar, Martin Budde on drums, and Kim Kix on double bass. A year later, a 6-track demo was sent to several music magazines and labels. Interest was shown by Crazy Love Records, which released some of the Godless Wicked Creeps songs along with three other bands on 7-inch vinyl.[4]
Then, in 1994, the band's first album, Victim Of Science, was released on the same label, which became the first CD released by Crazy Love Records. In May 1998 it was re-released on vinyl, and again on CD in 2000.
Victim Of Science immediately received good reviews and the Godless Wicked Creeps embarked on a European tour. Work on the second album, Hellcoholic, began a year later. In 1996, a new European tour took place, during which the group played at festivals with an audience of thousands. The third album, Hystereo, was released in 1997, and the United States was added to the touring geography.[5]
In March 1998, Dax Dragster left the group. Kim Kix and Martin Budde decided to increase the lineup to four: The new guitarist became Nik The Kid, recruited by Martin's other band The Defectors. On vocals, Lars Grip took over. Lars was member of Kim's side project, Lez Boomerang, as well as his brother.
After six months of rehearsals with the new line-up, the group embarks on a tour, including in the USA and Canada.
The fourth Godless Wicked Creeps album, Smile, was released by Lucky Seven Records in August 2001. After the European tour, in the spring of 2002, the group disbanded.[6]
Aftermath[edit]
After the Godless Wicked Creeps disbanded the members took up their own projects. Kim Kix, continued with Power Solo and the Siberian Mad Dogs (along with Alex Ryabokon, a musician from the legendary Russian neo-rockabilly band Swindlers).[7][8]
Original guitarist Dax Dragster formed Johnny Nightmare, the most closely replicated of the original band's legacy.
The tribute album We Are Rockers were released in 2012. The compilation included fourteen songs from the bands like Bloodsucking Zombies From Outer Space, Koffin Kats, Basementones, Astro Zombies and many more. It also contained one unreleased GWC song called "Wank'n'Roll", and three previously-unseen live videos.
In 2018, the album Live in San Francisco came out, containing a previously un-released full live-recording. The show was recorded November 7th 1998 in Transmission Theater, San Francisco, in collaboration with Barnyard Ballers frontman Rich Stahlhult.[9][10]
