A goristro is a fictional demon in the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game.
Publication history[edit]
The goristro was introduced to the D&D game in the first edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition (1977–1988)[edit]
The goristro (major demon) first appeared in Dragon #91 (November 1984); the article's author, Gary Gygax, explained that he had intended to put the creature into Monster Manual II along with the other demons.
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition (1989–1999)[edit]
In this edition, demons became known as tanar'ri, with the goristro greater tanar'ri appearing in the Planes of Chaos boxed set (1994) for the Planescape campaign setting.[1]
The goristro greater tanar'ri appears again in Monstrous Compendium Annual Three (1996).
Dungeons & Dragons 3.0 edition (2000–2002)[edit]
In this edition, the name demon is resumed, and tanar'ri are now considered a sub-type of demon.[2] The goristro (tanar'ri) appears in this edition's Manual of the Planes (2001).[3]
Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 edition (2003–2007)[edit]
The goristro is one of several demons appearing in Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss (2006).[4]
Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition (2008–)[edit]
The goristro appears in the Monster Manual for this edition (2008), again under the demon entry.[5]
Description[edit]
Goristros are described as huge demons resembling a man with the head of a bison. Goristros are depicted as rude and violent enemies, often employed on the battlefield by demon lords as siege engines. Because of their limited intelligence, Goristros are seldom described as weaving intrigues and to plot against other demons, and authors instead apply them as elite shock troops of the demon lords of the in-game Abyss.
