Grandluxe is a family-owned Singaporean company which started in 1942 as a book binder.[1][2] The company is best known for its diaries, hand-stitched notebooks, accessories and corporate gifts.[3] Its products can be found locally in bookstores, and also internationally in countries such as Australia, Hong Kong and United Arab Emirates.[4][5] It has five main brands: Grandluxe, PaperLuxe, Monologue, Luxe, and Bynd Artisan.[4][6]

History

In 1942, the founder of Grandluxe, Mr. Chan Koon Song, started a small bindery workshop.[3][4] Three years later, it was established as Goy Liang Book-Making Company, a sole-proprietorship business.[1][2] In 1964, Mr. Chan Koon Song fell ill and his son, Mr. Percy Chan, took over the family business at the age of 18.[2]

Since the 1970s, Mr. Chong Beng Cheng joined the business as a sales and production manager, after which he made products ranging from Grandluxe’s accounts books to leather gifts for numerous Royal Families.[7] He is currently Bynd Artisan’s Master Craftsman.[3][7] In 1976, Grandluxe Private Limited was incorporated and took over Goy Liang Book-Making Company.[1]

In the 1980s, three-quarters of Grandluxe’s total production output went to the Middle East, accounting for half of the export sales, with the rest going to Australia, the Pacific Islands and Hong Kong. Raw materials were also imported from Scandinavian countries, Japan, North America and Latin America.[1] In 1994, Mr. Chan’s granddaughter, Ms. Winnie Chan, joined the company’s management as a third-generation leader.[2]

Company Profile

Products

Besides its core brand, Grandluxe also produces diaries and notebooks under its brand portfolios Monologue, Luxe and PaperLuxe.[6][8]

According to a report in the Straits Times in Year 2000, it was reported that the Singapore market makes up around 10 percent of Grandluxe’s revenue. The rest of its revenue is generated from countries such as Australia, the Middle East, Canada and Hong Kong.[5]

Bynd Artisan

Ms. Winnie Chan started the Bynd Artisan atelier as a design-focused retail brand, where customers can customize their notebooks at their bindery workshop.[4][7] Bynd Artisan also hosts various workshops that teaches participants how to bind and make books the traditional way.[9]

To support local talent, Bynd Artisan has also worked with several of Singapore’s notable design and art personalities to launch capsule collections.[10] For example, they have collaborated with local artist, Erwin Lian, on a Kickstarter project. The Kickstarter project aimed to launch a sketch book customized for traveling artists. With more than 800 backers and USD$50,000 pledged to the project, it was successfully funded in August 2014 and fulfilled in January 2015.[11] Designer Larry Peh, photographer John Clang and singer-songwriter Gentle Bones have also collaborated with Bynd Artisan on projects.[4][12]
