Though not directly seen or mentioned, Groundbreaker was among the Autobots who accompanied Fortress Maximus in leaving Cybertron for the planet Nebulos (Transformers: Headmasters #1). Unfortunately, they were pursued to Nebulos by the Decepticons under Scorponok, leading to renewed conflict. Fortress Maximus's group left Nebulos for Earth, with the Decepticons in hot pursuit. (Transformers: Headmasters #4).
When Brainstorm needed subjects to duplicate a Decepticon Pretender experiment, Groundbreaker and five other Autobots volunteered, becoming Autobot Pretenders. They battled the Decepticon Pretenders with the aid of Optimus Prime and Goldbug (Transformers #40). They decisively defeated their Decepticon counterparts, who initially mistook them for large humans.
