Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study
The Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study (GIAS) is an independent institute for advanced study located in the Lisbon area, Portugal. The GIAS was established in February 2025 and is fully funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and isn't affiliated with any university or public agency.
The GIAS offers scholars time and space to pursue independent research in an environment that encourages open intellectual exchange and academic freedom.
Programs
Each academic year a limited number of scholars is elected to the GIAS residential fellowships, in most fields of inquiry with no laboratorial or experimental requirements (mainly but not exclusively in the humanities). On-campus residencies take place during the academic year and may not exceed nine months. The GIAS accepts applications from active academics, emeriti, independent scholars, and practicing artists.
The GIAS also sponsors small-scale initiatives by fellows in residence such as open workshops, seminars and conferences.
Headquarters
In the 2026/27 and 2027/28 academic years the GIAS will operate out of the Gulbenkian Foundation headquarters in Lisbon, in building complex classified as a national monument since 2010, which includes the Gulbenkian Gardens, the Gulbenkian Museum and the Gulbenkian Modern Art Center.
From the Fall of 2028 the GIAS will operate from its permanent headquarters, in the town of Oeiras, through a partnership with the city. The new building is currently undergoing extensive restoration and remodeling, and will accommodate individual workspaces, seminar rooms, a fellows’ lounge, an auditorium, and a small restaurant.
Leadership
The GIAS founding director is Miguel Tamen. The Advisory Board comprises well-known scholars such as Brett Bourbon, Lorraine Daston, Caroline A. Jones, Mark Lilla, Sofia Miguens and Ricardo Soares de Oliveira.
