Gunaratna Sadavarte is an Ambedkarite lawyer from Maharashtra, India.

Personal life[edit]

Sadavarte was born in Nanded to father Nivritti Sadavarte who was a police department employee.[1] He was educated at Milind College, Aurangabad (, LLB, & LLM) and Mumbai (BDS)). As a student, he ran Samyak Vidyarthi Andolan in Nanded, agitating on issues facing students.

He is married to Jayshree Patil, a lawyer who works at Mumbai High-court.[2] She was born to Ambedkarite Freedom fighter Laxmanrao Kisanrao Patil.[3] The couple have a daughter named Zen; named after the Buddhist concept of Zen.[4]

Career[edit]

In 1999, Sadavarte worked at the Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College in Nanded as a dentist.[1]

He began practicing law in Mumbai. He has done Ph.D. on Constitution of India.[citation needed]

He was twice President of the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) in Aurangabad.[citation needed]

In 2018, the Maharashtra government had given reservation to the Maratha community under the category of Socially and Educationally Backward (SEBC). However, he successfully contested the plea in the Supreme Court that the reservation given to the Marathas was unconstitutional.[5]

Attacks[edit]

Sadavarte has received thousands of threats for filing a petition against Maratha reservation.[6] Sadavarte has alleged that the threat of Satara MP Udayanraje Bhosale is also included in it.[citation needed] In 2018, Sadavarte was attacked by a Maratha reservation supporter while talking to the media. The attcker was quickly arrested and Sadavarte's colleagues and the police took him to safety.[7]

Maratha Reservation case[edit]

In 2018, the Maharashtra government had given reservation to the Maratha community under the category of 'Social and Educational Backward (SEBC)'. However, Sadavarte argued in the Supreme Court that this reservation should not be given as it is unconstitutional. On 5 May 2021, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court unanimously struck down the reservation granted to the Maratha community under the SEBC Act. The reservation given to the Maratha community is unconstitutional, hence the petition to cancel it. Filed by Jayshree Patil. Senior freedom fighter who challenged the Maratha Reservation Act of 2014 in court.. After hearing their petition, the Supreme Court declared the Maratha reservation invalid.
