Gurdeep Pandher (Punjabi: ਗੁਰਦੀਪ ਪੰਧੇਰ) is a Canadian artist, author and public figure, born in the village of Siahar, Ludhiana district, Punjab, India. Gurdeep has written two books, one in English and one in Punjabi. He is the author of Kalpana Chawla's biography, Among the stars - Life and dreams of Kalpana Chawla.[2][6] The book traces Kalpana Chalwa's family roots, her childhood and her ascent to fame. The book has been reprinted 3 times since its first publication.[2] He also wrote a book in Punjabi poetry Mitti De Ghar[3] using folk and agricultural symbols. Gurdeep has a masters in public administration from Panjab University in Chandigarh.[1] He is also a performing artist and bhangra dance teacher.[7]

Mitti De Ghar[3], in Punjabi language, published in 2002 - The book Mitti De Ghar is an anthology of poems or poetical-songs, written in the lyrical style that the poems can be sung along with the music, explores emotional depth using folkloric agricultural symbols and metaphors[3].

Among the stars[edit]

Among the stars - Life and dreams of Kalpana Chawla[2], in English language, published in 2004 - This book is first biography of NASA astronaut of Indian origin Kalpana Chawla. The books is an illustrated biography of a girl who dedicated her life to scientific research on exploration of space and met with a tragic end. She belonged to a family of refugees who had migrated from Pakistan after partition in 1947 and had settled down at Karnal, India. Kalpana completed here schooling at Tagore Bal Niketan, Karnal and obtained a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. After the success of her first flight in 1997, she was hailed as the proud daughter of the globe. Her second flight ended abruptly on February 1, 2003 when Space Shuttle Columbia and her crew perished during entry, 16 minute prior to scheduled landing.[8]

Gurdeep is also a lyricist, bhangra artist, and singer. His Yukon made bhangra videos went viral.[9] Ever since he moved to the Yukon in 2012, he has been dancing and providing bhangra lessons at many locations in the Yukon. His Yukon made bhangra dance videos went viral and his work has been featured on CBC North,[9] BBC News,[10] CBC News The National, CTV National News,[11] BuzzFeed,[12] The Huffington Post, SBS Australia, and many other platforms.

Gurdeep Pandher has become one of Yukon’s most active ambassadors with his Bhangra videos.

Whitehorse Mayor Turban[edit]

In December 2016, Whitehorse mayor Dan Curtis took a lesson from Gurdeep Pandher on video how to wear a Sikh turban.[14] The video went that much viral that over a million people watched it in one day from Gurdeep's Facebook page.[15] Then the video was re-published by BBC News[16] where over 12 million people watched the video. Nationally and internationally, Toronto Star[17], The Globe and Mail[18], USA Today, MSN[19] and Russian international television network RT also published the the same video on the networks.

Air North Video[edit]

Air North, Yukon's Airline made a video in spring 2017 with Gurdeep Pandher as the lead role. The theme of the video was "Bags and Bhangra". The video went viral, became Air North's most viewed video in its online history and registered 305,000 views.[20]
