GURDEEP SINGH is the Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC Limited (formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited).[1][2] It is an Indian Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Power, Government of India.[3][4][5] It is the largest power company in India with an electric power generating capacity of 63925 MW (including JVs) Although the company has approximately 17.04% of the total national capacity, it contributes to over 24% of total power generation due to its focus on operating its power plants at higher efficiency levels. NTPC currently produces 25 billion units of electricity per month.
NTPC is trying to become an integrated energy company rather than only remaining a coal-based power company. The company has set an ambitious target for non-fossil fuel-based capacity to reach 30 percent of the total installed capacity by 2032. It is time to think about new clean energy solutions, including for cooking and cooling purposes.[6][7][8]

Biography
Shri Gurdeep Singh assumed the position of Chairman & Managing Director of NTPC on 4 February 2016. [11]
He has a distinguished career spanning over three decades in the power sector. He began his career in 1987 as an Engineer Trainee with NTPC and has progressed through various ranks in both public and private sectors. He has held CxO/Senior positions in Indian companies (GSECL, IDFC, and CESC) as well as in multinational companies (PowerGen, CLP, and AES). His extensive experience encompassing all aspects of the power generation business, in diverse organizations and cultural environments, has equipped him with the ability to address complex power sector issues.
Prior to joining NTPC, he served as Managing Director of Gujarat State Electricity Company (GSECL). His consistent focus on cost reduction led to the conceptualization of coal swapping and freight rationalization well in advance. His visionary leadership transformed GSECL, making the company highly cost-competitive and forward-looking.
He firmly believes that occupational health and safety, employee empowerment, capability enhancement, and process optimization are crucial for achieving excellence. He has emphasized the importance of global exposure for NTPC executives to prepare them for future business challenges. He has initiated a series of initiatives to sustain NTPC's growth and foster the cultural changes needed to maintain NTPC's position as a leading global power company. His emphasis on minimizing the environmental footprint, maximizing sustainability efforts, and a focused approach of 'Low Cost Low Emission' aligns with India's ambitious goal of providing cleaner and affordable power to all. Education
Gurdeep Singh holds a mechanical engineering degree from NIT Kurukshetra and completed a management education program at IIM Ahmedabad (India). He has also received management and leadership training from global institutions such as Saïd Business School-Oxford (UK), Harvard-Kennedy School (USA), Darden School of Management - Virginia (USA), Singapore Civil Services College (Singapore), and ISB Hyderabad (India).[15]
