The Islamic prophet, Muhammad, specified ten of his companions who were promised paradise. The companions named in this hadith are referred to as The Ten With Glad Tidings of Paradise (Arabic: العشرة المبشرون بالجنة‎, romanized: al-`Asharaa al-Mubasharûn bi-l-Janna) The hadith is collected in two of the six books of the Kutub al-Sittah: the Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi[1] and the Sunan Abu Dawood.[2]

The version of the hadith collected in the Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi goes as follows:[1]

Narrated ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAwf:that the Messenger of Allah said:

Abu Bakr is in Paradise, ʿUmar is in Paradise, ʿUthman is in Paradise, ʿAli is in Paradise, Talhah is in Paradise, Az-Zubair is in Paradise, ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAwf is in Paradise, Saʿd bin Abi Waqqas is in Paradise, Saʿeed is in Paradise, Abu ʿUbaidah bin Al-Jarrah is in Paradise.[1]

Sunni view[edit]

The majority of Sunnis viewing it favorably.[3][4][5] This hadith was narrated in three collections by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood, and Ibn Majah.

The Sunni collection of hadith, called the Kutub al-Sittah (six major hadith collections), includes: Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawood, Al-Sunan al-Sughra, Jami` at-Tirmidhi and Sunan ibn Majah. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are considered the most reliable of these collections.[6]

Sunnis say that Muhammad's companions were sorted into twelve groups[7] and of these the ten promised paradise were ranked first.[7][8]

Shia view[edit]

Shias reject this hadeeth completely as they do not have these traditions within their hadith corpus. They also believe that these traditions are fabricated within the Sunni compendiums during the era of the Umayyad dynasty as the traditions differ between themselves on who those 10 individuals are.[9]

    Narrated Sa'id ibn Zayd:

Abdur-Rahman ibn al-Akhnas said that when he was in the mosque, a man mentioned Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). So Sa'id ibn Zayd got up and said:
I bear witness to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that I heard him say:
Ten persons will go to Paradise: The Prophet (ﷺ) will go to Paradise, Abu Bakr will go to Paradise, Umar will go to Paradise, Uthman will go to Paradise, Ali will go to Paradise, Talhah will go to Paradise, az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam will go to paradise, Sa'd ibn Malik will go to Paradise, and Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf will go to Paradise. If I wish, I can mention the tenth. The people asked: Who is he? So he kept silence. They again asked: Who is he? He replied: He is Sa'id ibn Zayd.
