Haikara-San: Here Comes Miss Modern Part 1[3] is a 2017 Japanese animated romance film directed and written by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, produced by Nippon Animation, and distributed by Warner Bros. Japan. The film was released in Japan on November 11, 2017.[4]

Based on a manga series with a same name written and illustrated by Waki Yamato, the film covers the first half of the story of the manga, and was followed by Part 2 in 2018.[5]

Plot[edit]

In the Taishō era, 17 year-old Benio Hanamura, a tomboy who dislikes the idea of arranged marriage and prefers women to choose their own husbands, meets a lieutenant named Shinobu Ijuin after rescuing her from fallimg off a tree while flying a kite. She meets him again, and as she tries to attack him with a kendo stick, her father reveals that Shinobu is her fiancé. After being revealed that both of their families made pacts before their birth, Benio refuses and tries to elope with her childhood friend Ranmaru, but Shinobu takes her back home.

As she stays with Ijuin's family, she purposely makes errors in her wifely duties, hoping it'll cancel the engagement. However, her scheme fails as Shinobu is in love with her and patiently been forgiving her actions, while she herself slowly falls in love with him. However, a major in the army who holds a grudge against Shinobu then sends the young lieutenant to fight in Manchuria. Benio stays on in the Ijuin home to care for Shinobu's grandparents and wait for his return. After learning that Shinobu had presumably died, she cuts her waist-length hair short and vows never to marry another person. Benio decides to get a job to help out with the family's dire financial situation, and gets hired on a local newspaper company by a misogynistic boss, Tosei.

Production[edit]

In November 2016, it was first announced that an animated two-part film based on Haikara-San: Here Comes Miss Modern manga series written and illustrated by Waki Yamato was in development, with Saori Hayami and Mamoru Miyano starring as lead chracters: Benio and Shinobu Ijūin respectively.[6][7] Terumi Nishii and Michiru Ōshima were announced as character designer and music composer respectively, while Kazuhiro Furuhashi directed and wrote the first film.[8]

The theme song for the film is "Yume no Hate Made" (夢の果てまで, lit. "Until the End of the Dream"), performed by Sayori Hayami, and written and composed by Mariya Takeuchi.[9]

Release[edit]

The film was released in theaters in Japan on November 11, 2017.[4] Eleven Arts screened the film in both Canada and U.S. on June 8, 2018.[10]

Reception[edit]

Box office[edit]

The film failed to make top 10 in the Japanese box office in its opening weekend, as it was placed in number 11.[11][12]

Critical reception[edit]

Kim Morrisy of Anime News Network gave the film B+ rating, and stated "How much you get out of Haikara-San: Here Comes Miss Modern will probably depend on how much nostalgia you have for old-school shōjo manga, but this is still a solid romance film in its own right. I'm cautious about recommending it too strongly at the moment, because the story is still incomplete after this first film. It remains to be seen whether the second film can capitalize on the strengths of the first, or whether it will be constrained by the flaws in its source material."[13]

Sequel[edit]

The second part of the two-part film, Haikara-San: Here Comes Miss Modern Part 2, covering the latter half of the story of the manga series was released in Japan on October 19, 2018.[5][14]
