Hamdhan Shakeel (Dhivehi: ޙަމްދާން ޝަކީލް born 23 June 1991) is a Maldivian entrepreneur, journalist, and social activist.

Early life and education[edit]

Born in the capital city Malé, Hamdhan Shakeel grew up attending to local schools including Majeediyya School and the Centre for Higher Secondary Education. He later attended the Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL) in Malaysia where he studied engineering.

Career[edit]

Retuning from Malaysia he entered into the construction industry as an Operations Manager[2]. It was during his years of activism that he was drawn into journalism. After years of social activism[3] and journalism, Hamdhan Shakeel founded the Maldives News Network[4] in 2020, which has since become one of the largest online English newspapers in the Maldives. Since then Hamdhan Shakeel has been featured on many international publications on his writings on geopolitics and socioeconomics. Major international news organizations such as Xinhua News Agency[5], The Nation[6] (Thailand) and was even mentioned by Chinese Foriegn Ministry's Spokesperson Zhao Lijian in an international press conference[7]. He is one of the three Maldivian journalists to provide commentary for international publications. He provides commentary for Chinese State Media CCTV 13.[8]

In 2020 he was faced with legal action[9][10] from the First Lady of Maldives Fazna Ahmed following the publication of an article titled "MNN Exclusive: City Hall- Delta of Corruption", which uncovered a corruption case in the Maldives with possible links to the First Lady. Shakeel and Maldives News Network (MNN) was summoned to the Maldives Media Council.

In December 2021 he openly called to boycott a media training offer by the Government of India, citing solidarity with the Indian media. Several news organizations joined him in his boycott.[11]

Personal Life[edit]

Hamdhan Shakeel is the youngest of a family of 8. His elder Brother Mohamed Shakeel is a former Minister of State for the Ministry of Economic Development and later served as the Secretary General of the opposition party PPM[12]. He is also siblings with Ibrahim Shakeel, who was the Acting Head of the Central Bank's Financial Investigation Unit and later a member[13] of the Anti-Corruption Commission of Maldives. Hamdhan Shakeel is married with two children.
