Hamdi Mohamed (born 1989 or 1990)[1] is an American politician who is a Commissioner of the Port of Seattle. Elected in 2021, she is the first Black woman elected to the position.[2]

Early life and education[edit]

Mohamed was born in Somalia and came to King County at 3 as a refugee.[3] Her father worked as a trucker and her mother worked at Seattle Tacoma Airport.[4] She received a Bachelors of Arts in Law, Society, and Justice and a Masters of Arts in policies studies from the University of Washington.[2]

She previously worked as a district director for U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal and currently works as a policy adviser to King County Executive Dow Constantine on matters related to equity and economic development.[1][5]

Port of Seattle Commission[edit]

2021 campaign[edit]

Mohamed announced her campaign for Port of Seattle Commission Position 3 on February 17, 2021.[5][6] She ran on a platform centered on environmental issues, job creation, and equity with proposals to expand electric rail and electrify ships.[7][1] She earned endorsements from U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson, Washington Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, as well as the King County Labor Council and raised around $200,000.[4] Mohamed won over incumbent Commissioner Stephanie Bowman after initially trailing in votes, she was considered an "underdog" along with Toshiko Grace Hasegawa.[8]

She is the first Black woman elected to the commission and the first Somali American woman to be elected to office in Washington.[2]
