Hau L. Lee is an academic who works in the field of supply chain management (including the bullwhip effect).[1][2][3][4][5] As of 2022, Lee is currently an economics professor at Stanford University.[6]
Career[edit]
Hau Lee completed an undergraduate degree in economics and statistics at the University of Hong Kong and a masters degree in operations research from the London School of Economics in 1974, followed by a PhD in operations research at the University of Pennsylvania in 1983.[citation needed]
Lee joined the Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management at Stanford University in 1983. As of 2022, Lee is a co-director of Stanford University's Value Chain Innovation Initiative centre[7] and their Powering Digital Value Chains four-day online course.[8]
The 1997 paper “Information Distortion in a Supply Chain: The Bullwhip Effect”[4] - written by V. Padmanabhan, Seungjin Whang and Lee - has been listed in the top ten influential papers from 1954 to 2003 for the Management Science journal.[9] The bullwhip effect refers to a supply-chain phenomenon in which inventory swings more dramatically in response to changes in consumer demand as one moves up the supply chain. According to the paper by Padmanabhan, Whang and Lee, the bullwhip effect can be attributed to four different factors: decentralization, poor communication, local optimization, and supply chain opacity.[5]
In 2001, he was a distinguished fellow of the Maryland-based Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Society,[10] and in 2005 he was a fellow of the Production and Operations Management Society.[11] In 2010, he was inducted to the National Academy of Engineering.[12]
Lee wrote an article titled "The Triple-A Supply Chain" in 2004 for the Harvard Business Review. He posited that agility, adaptability, and alignment are three key success factors in global supply chains.[13]
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology conferred Lee a Doctor of Engineering honoris causa in 2006.[2] In 2008, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Erasmus University Rotterdam.[3]
