Early life and education

Heena Shahab, born in November 1976 in Siwan district, completed her higher education at Daud Memorial Girls High School Bihar, Patna in 1985 and obtained an Intermediate certificate from Z.A. Islamia College Siwan, Bihar in 1988. She also earned a Bachelor's degree in Arts from Vidya Bhawan Mahila Mahavidyalya Siwan. [1] Once Heena said,

" The veil or hijab was customary in her family from her maternal in-laws. Even after this, I was never stopped for anything. I studied from school to college with complete independence. Then I was the only student of Siwan's college who used to come and study in the veil or hijab".[2][3]

During her college years, she married Mohammad Shahabuddin.

Political career

In the Indian general elections, 2009, her husband was in jail serving life imprisonment for kidnapping and murder in 2007[2] During this period, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav gave a ticket to Mohammad Shahabuddin's wife, Heena Shahab, in 2009, 2014, and 2019. Shahab had limited political experience. She had primarily led a devout life, spending most of her time immersed in religious scriptures and household duties.[4] Until then, she had maintained a life of devotion. She contested from her husband's Siwan Lok Sabha constituency as a candidate of the RJD political party.

2009 elections

In the 2009 elections, her main opponent was independent candidate Om Prakash Yadav. Heena was not a prominent campaigner, only appearing at a few meetings with RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and her star campaigner, bollywood movie actor Sanjay Dutt.[5] She received 172,764 votes (approximately 29%), but lost to Prakash by 63,000 votes.[6][7]

2014 elections

Shahab secured the 2014 ticket for the Siwan parliamentary constituency, again contesting against Om Prakash Yadav, who this time ran as a member of the BJP party. Prakash won and became member of parliament from this seat. He collected a total of 372,670 votes and secured the first position, while Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Heena Shahab, wife of Mohammad Shahabuddin, came in second with 258,823 votes. She lost by 113,847 votes.[8][9][10][11]

2019 elections

Again, in the 2019 elections, Heena Shahab contested for the parliament constituency in Siwan district with the RJD, but this time was defeated by Kavita Singh.[12][13][14][15] Kavita Singh, wife of Ajay Kumar Singh, a criminal profiled leader also embroiled in several criminal cases, was the Janata Dal (United) candidate, a two-time Member of the Legislative Assembly. She was backed by the BJP and JDU, with Amit Shah reportedly campaigning for her.[16]
