Hefair (Arabic:حفير), or Hafir, is a community of the Emirate of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Administratively it is part of the Sector 9 and is located in the southern part of Dubai.
Territory
The territory of the community occupies an area of 143.6 km2[1] which develops in a non-urban area in the southern part of Dubai, called Madinat Al Qudra, bordering the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The area is bounded on the north by Mugatrah community, on the west by Saih Al Danal and Al O'shoosh on the south by Al Ain region (Eastern region) of Abu Dhabi and west by Abu Dhabi Municipality (Abu Dhabi Region).[2]
The territory is completely desert and falls entirely in the south-western area of the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve.
The northeastern part of the territory can be traversed by the Al Qudra Cycle Path Route 2 (18 km long), a track that is part of the larger Al Qudra Cycle Track (also called Saih Al Salam Bicycle track), along over 130 km, which connects the Al Qudra lakes and Al Marmoom desert area with the central district of Wadi Al Safa.[3]
The central-eastern area of Hefair is occupied by a large military base of the Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Authority (CICPA).[4] CICPA is a government authority in the United Arab Emirates operating under the Directorate of the Armed Forces. It is responsible for the safety of oil facilities (onshore and offshore) and for the protection of critical infrastructure in the Emirates.[5]
Within the community, just west of the aforementioned military base, is the archaeological site of Saruq Al-Hadid. The site, discovered in 2002, is one of the most important in the Arabian Peninsula and dates back as a settlement to the Bronze Age (2600-2000 BC), but was inhabited continuously until the second Iron Age, which in the region dates from 1,000 to 600 BC. It was a major metallurgical manufacturing center that was associated with the Culture of Umm Al Nar.[6]
The area is not currently served by the Dubai Metro and there are currently no public surface lines passing through it.[7]
