Madinat Al Mataar (Arabic:مدينة المطار), also known as Dubai South, is a community of the Emirate of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. It is located in the Sector 5 in the southwestern area of Dubai. In the community is the Al Maktoum International Airport and the exhibition ground of Expo 2020.
Story
Until the early 2000s the area was almost totally desert until the project called Dubai World Central (DWC) was announced in 2005, which envisaged a multifunctional development of the area with the then international airport at the center called Dubai World Central International.[1]
DWC airport, later called Al Maktoum International Airport, was inaugurated on June 28, 2010.[2]
In August 2015 the project was renamed Dubai South,[3] also integrating the exhibition area planned for the universal exposition 2020.
Territory
The territory of the community occupies an area of 75.7 km2[4] along the southern coast of Dubai, bordering the Abu Dhabi Municipality.
The area is located between Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E 311) to the west and Emirates Road (E 611) to the east, while to the north it is bounded by Expo Road (E 77) and to the south by the community of Saih Shuaib.[5]
A large part of the area is occupied by the Al Maktoum international airport and the areas associated with it (parking, cargo area, offices), although there are also residential and commercial areas.
In the northwest area, at the intersection of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Expo Road, is the exhibition area used for the 2020 World Expo, which was renamed Expo City after the end of the exposition.
The residential area is located at the northeastern edge of the community, at the intersection of Expo Road and Emirates Road.
The area is served only to a limited extent by the Metro with the Expo 2020 stop on the Red Line , which serves the exhibition area of the same name. However, there are surface lines that connect the main areas of the community.
