Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Slovakia

The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Slovakia (HVS) (Slovak translation: Helsinský výbor pre ľudské práva na Slovensku) is a non-governmental organization established on 3.10.2012.[1] The organization strives to continue upholding traditions of the original Czechoslovak Helsinki Committee, established in 1988, and its successor, Slovak Helsinki Committee, established in 1993.

The motto of the restored Slovak Helsinki Committee is the first paragraph of the Copenhagen document: "The participating states are herby expressing their belief that protection of human rights and basic freedoms is one of the main objectives of the government and assert that recognition of these rights and freedoms is the fundament of freedom, justice and peace."[2]

Mission[edit]

The main objective and mission of the HVS are increasing awareness of human rights and general improvement of human rights environment in Slovakia, particularly through the members´ self-education, education in the field of human rights and democratic society, monitoring of the state of human rights, engaging in creating public policies related to the implementation of human rights, including advisory to the government, organizing conferences, workshops and publishing. One of the key target groups are children and young adults.[3]
