Jean-Louis Mattana (Reims, 18 September 1921 – Turin, 29 July 2015) was a French-Italian painter.

Biography

Jean-Louis Mattana was born in Alsace in 1921 and resided in Paris where he attended a private school of painting. He moved to Turin with his family during the Second World War and there he attended the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti, where he was a student of Gregorio Calvi di Bergolo.

Although painting was his true love, Jean-Louis Mattana also dedicated himself to graphics and ceramics during the sixties.

Career

His pictorial activity began in the 1940s and early 1950s, not without difficulties and economic hardships; during the fifties he lived in Turin in a small and uncomfortable attic in Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and was forced to paint postcards during Christmas time to earn some money.

In the summer he moved to Noli, to sell landscapes and other paintings in the street. That way he was known to art dealers from Turin and the Ligurian Riviera and later on his fame spread also abroad. His activity took place in Turin, Pietra Marazzi (Alessandria), Paris, Neuilly, Cannes and Cernay (Alsace), where he had an atelier until 1986.

His works can be found in collections in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Belgium, Austria and Holland; in the Museum of Saint Paul de Vence, in the Municipal Gallery of Casale Monferrato and in the Civic Art Collection at Palazzo Vittone of Pinerolo.
