Henri White (born 13 October 1993 in Gravesend, Kent) is an English magician and pianist now based in London. As well as his public appearances, Henri is also well known amongst fellow magicians for running several large forums for magicians as well as creating and selling tricks with magic companies such as Murphy's Magic, Ellusionist and World Magic Shop.
Early Life
Henri White was born in 1993 to Wendy Ireland and Nigel White, landlords of The See Ho Public House in Shorne, Kent. He grew up living in the flat above The See Ho. Attending the local nursery at Gads Hill School, before moving on to the local primary school, Shorne School. It was during primary school that Henri discovered a love for magic, a combination of seeing local magician Spencer Wood and big stars like David Blaine and Max Somerset on TV inspired a great interest in magic for Henri.
It was on his 7th birthday (13 October 2000) that Henri received a Marvin's Magic set from a patron of the pub. Henri performed tricks from this set at his school. It was also around this time he learned the piano; he was taught by Tony Kilkenny, a local musician who taught Henri on and off until his teens.
Henri then received private tuition from local magician Spencer Wood, ultimately securing his passion for magic.
After passing his 11+, Henri attended Gravesend Grammar School, where he discovered his true love for playing music, joining both the junior band and chamber orchestra in his first term. Magic took a back seat while he focused on his studies. In his third year he started a circus skills club where he eventually rediscovered his love for magic tricks.
Early Career
Henri's first professional work was as a juggler and circus act; his professional debut was in a show hosted in Tunbridge Wells called "Saturday Night Light", hosted and arranged by local entertainer Tom Swift. His skill with fire was noticed by a local promotional group who hired Henri to be part of their circus division. During this time Henri learned his craft as an entertainer.
He discovered his local magic club, The Medway Magical Society. Twice a month he performed and learned tricks from fellow local magicians; he was also reunited with his childhood mentor Spencer Wood, as well as meeting countless other local performers ranging from hobbyists to full-time professionals. He won their Cabaret Magician of the year award in 2010 aged only 15. Following this he entered The Magic Circle Young Magician of the Year competition (YMotY)[1], progressing through the heats and competing in the live finals at The Magic Circle HQ aged 16 alongside 5 other young magicians.
It was at this time Henri decided to put performing ahead of his academic career. He stayed at Gravesend Grammar school until sixth form, leaving in 2012 without wishing to go to university.
Adult Career
Upon leaving school Henri pursued his career as a professional close-up magician. To increase his knowledge of magic he volunteered to help at his favourite magic shop, Davenports Magic, underground Charing Cross Station in Central London. Here he practiced his magic all day, talked to magicians around the world as well as keeping up to date with the world of magic. He was also briefly mentored by Paul Daniels at his home in Wargrave.
Aged 19 Henri passed an exam to become a Member of The Magic Circle[2], a club which Henri attends regularly. Fellow members include Dynamo, Fay Presto and David Copperfield.
Henri appeared as a surprise guest on the 2014 reboot of Sunday Night at the Palladium, episode two, hosted by Jason Manford.[3]
Henri continued to live at home until he was 21, finally moving to Harrow on the Hill in 2015 to be closer to his work.
At this time Henri took a job for Marvin's Magic, the same company that made the magic set he received on his 7th birthday. He worked at the Harrods branch from March 2015, and in November of that year he was promoted to Concession Manager. He held this role until February 2016 and then left in April. During his time at Harrods Henri performed for customers 5 days a week and met influential people from all around the world, including Adele, Lily Allen, Dave Grohl, to name but a few, and had the privilege of performing and demonstrating to several royal families and dignitaries including the Queen of Indonesia and the President of China.
While living in London he became a much more established performer; he sought regular advice from fellow magician Fay Presto. He performed across the capital at countless events including the Royal Variety Show after-party.
Henri is now working across London and the UK doing private performances, and is the resident pianist at The Hippodrome Casino, Leicester Square.
Magic Projects
Henri has worked with several magic companies to create magic tricks for fellow magicians. His first project was working with World Magic Shop to demonstrate "The Answer"[4] on behalf of Ron Salamangkero. This was a new adaptation of the classic signed, torn and restored playing card, which featured additional thought from Henri.
His first solo project was a smoke-from-anywhere concept called "MYST"[5] released by US company Ellusionist. To date his biggest release is another collaboration with World Magic Shop called "The Souvenir"[6], a signed playing card impossibly linked onto the stem of an ordinary wine glass.
Henri is known to be working with Murphy's Magic on a product due for release in 2016.
Henri has lectured on his own created material at The Medway Magical Society, South London Magic Society, London Society of Magician and The Magic Circle. He also organised an event at The Magic Circle called "Scrap Heap Challenge" where four notable members had to try to create a magic act in 4 hours using nothing but scrap. The competitors were Ben Hart, Lee Hathaway (assisted by Debbie McGee), Simon Lovell and Paul Daniels. This sadly became Paul Daniels' last appearance at The Magic Circle on a club night.
