Aaron Andrew Abernathy, also known by his stage name AB[1], is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.[2][3]

Career[edit]

Aaron Abernathy, professionally known as AB, was born in Cleveland, Ohio and began practicing music as a child and young adult. AB pursued further training in music at Howard University, majoring in jazz piano and performing in the local DC music scene.[4] After forming the band AB and the Souljourners in the mid-2000s, AB received opportunities to collaborate with Eric Roberson, who also trained in music programs at Howard. Further collaborations with recording artists such as Slum Village and Marsha Ambrosius, ensued with AB contributing to albums and live performances from both acts.[5]

AB has been a frequent collaborator of rapper and producer Black Milk, performing instrumentation and vocals on multiple albums by the Detroit-based artist.[6] Abernathy collaborated with the bassist Daru Jones, drummer Malik Hunter to form the backing band for Black Milk's live performances under the moniker of Nat Turner.[7]

On April 4, 2018, AB released a single entitled "Generation", from his second full-length album Dialogue. The music video for the single coincided with the 50th anniversary of the assassination of civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. and features historical footage of protests and civil rights leaders.[8] The album is also interspersed with speeches and dialogue of leaders from the American Civil Rights movement.[9]

AB released the album Affirmations on January 6, 2020. Unlike previous albums primarily within the genres of R&B and Soul music, the album consists primarily of spoken word meditations, along with separate instrumental tracks.[10]
