Background

Heroes 2 Villains came into tuition after the duo's previous collaborations on the songs "Look At My Life", "Midnight Cypher" and "Been That Real" from John Anthony's fifth studio album Villaination! (2022), "Come Around" and "Squad Shit" from J Mont's debut studio album Premonition (2022), "Donna" from John Anthony's sixth studio album Success Story (2023) and "Nightmare Feels" from J Mont's second studio album Mont Rushmore (2023). Earlier in the 2023 year, John Anthony appeared on Hip Hop Radar Underground Podcast on YouTube where he talked and reviewed his latest studio album Success Story. In the interview, he mentioned that him and J Mont "Have been working on something". On June 11, 2023, Villainous Records posted a picture of John Anthony and J Mont working in the studio via their Instagram, with the caption reading: "The scariest season will showcase the scariest duo 🦹‍♂️ #H2V". August 11, J Mont released the song "Nightmare Feels" featuring John Anthony on his second studio album Mont Rushmore. Upon release, the song serviced to mainstream independent radio and paved the way for the collaboration album of Heroes 2 Villains.

On August 21, J Mont also appeared on the Hip Hop Radar Underground Podcast to talk his solo album Mont Rushmore. He would go on and talk about his song "Nightmare Feels" with John Anthony, stating: "This song was going to be on our duo album, which we have releasing in October.", ultimately announcing the collaboration album. Continuing: "We had about fourteen, fifteen tracks so we had extras and [John Anthony] asked me if I wanted to take any for my solo project and this was one I felt like we had a good combination of both of us on there... I felt like it fit for [Mont Rushmore].", he explained.

John Anthony and Villainous Records would officially announce the album online and on social media on October 1, along with the artwork. J Mont also appeared on another YouTube podcast where he stated the concept and thought-process for the creation of Heroes 2 Villains. He mentioned how he and John Anthony's love for comic books was the groundwork in creating the albums identity. He stated in the interview: "We chose [the title] Heroes 2 Villains because we both love comic books, especially the villains in the comic books".

Artwork

The cover art features a comic book-themed design, with both artists animated in a supervillain-like costumes, floating in space, staring down on the earth on fire. It was posted by the rappers on their Instagram profiles on October 1. The 3D, comic artwork was illustrated by Sasha F., a graphic designer from Fiverr.
