Background[edit]

After maritime conflict with India and Myanmar in 2011, Bangladesh Navy first felt the necessity to upgrade its surface fleet and weapons. The Forces Goal 2030 was introduced by the Bangladesh Armed Forces to replace aging surface fleet and establish Naval aviation wing of the Navy. Developing a full fledged frigate program was in discussion for five years, and as per plan, Chittagong Dry Dock Limited was purchased by the Navy and equipped to build High capacity Frigates to meet Bangladesh Navy's extensive frigate program, which aims to replace the existing frigates of the Navy. In 2017, Bangladesh Navy ordered CDDL to begin construction of the first two ship of the program, with fourteen more on the pipeline. The ships will be constructed with assistance from China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation.
