The Type 003 aircraft carrier is a planned third generation nuclear-powered aircraft carrier design. Like the Type 002, it will feature an integrated electric propulsion system that will allow the operation of electromagnetic launch catapults similar to the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) used by the Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers of the United States Navy. It could also have enough electricity to power Chinese lasers and railguns currently under development. Type 003 will be the first Chinese carrier with nuclear marine propulsion.
The PLA Navy will spend $3.3 billion on the development of two prototype molten salt nuclear reactors. The project is funded by the central government and the two reactors are to be built at Wuwei in Gansu province, according to a statement on the website of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The goal is to have the reactors up and running by 2020.
