Historical bible society
The Historical Bible Society is a traveling exhibition of archaic Christian documents which span nearly 1000 years. It is one of the only traveling Bible museums in the United States, and it frequently lends artifacts to other institutions for display.
The mission of HBS is the preservation and public display of historical Christian texts and art, with a focus on apologetics and the reliability of scripture. Admission to the exhibit is free, though donations are appreciated.
History[edit]
The Historical Bible Society was founded by Daniel Buttafuoco in 2001 after he began acquiring historical Christian texts as a hobby. Showing them to his Christian friends, he realized how valuable they were in bolstering people’s faith and helping them understand the reliability of the Bible and Christianity.
Buttafuoco acquired many of the books through auctions and dealers; experts carefully vetted them to ensure authenticity. He brought many of them to the United States from Europe after going through legal processes to ensure that antiquities laws were carefully followed. In recent years, the value of the collection has soared.
The Collection[edit]
The collection consists of approximately 40 rare books and manuscripts, some of which are one of a kind. Some of the texts include:
- A page from the Gutenberg Bible
- A Tyndale Bible
- A first-edition 1611 King James Bible
- A first-edition 1535 Coverdale Diglot Bible
- A first-edition Boston New Testament
- A 1539-1540 “Great Bible”
- A first-edition 1560 Geneva Bible
- Hand-written manuscripts from medieval Christian monasteries
- A 1743 Sauer Bible
- The first Bible translated into a Polynesian language (Maori)
- The first Bible translated into the Cherokee language
- A page from the 1663 Eliot Algonquin Bible, the first Bible to ever be printed in the Americas
- The smallest Bible ever printed
- The Bible on microfilm
- A 1550 edition of the Greek Textus Receptus
- A 1563 first edition of Foxe’s Book of Martyrs
Exhibits[edit]
The Historical Bible Society has been exhibited at many prominent centers of Christian thought in the United States, including the Moody Bible Institute and the Billy Graham Library.
The texts are always transported via a private chartered plane or private land transportation to ensure that they remain preserved and intact. The cost of transporting them to each new site is offset somewhat by donations but is mostly paid for by Buttafuoco.
Reception[edit]
Reception of the Historical Bible Society has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly from high-profile Christian leaders, including Ravi Zacharias and author/radio host Eric Metaxas.
Consider the Evidence[edit]
Consider the Evidence is a book that Buttafuoco wrote in 2018 to defend the Bible and Christian faith from the perspective of a trial lawyer who must make a case in court. Ravi Zacharias wrote the forward, and the book immediately became a bestseller in Christian apologetics. 100% of the sales profits from the book go directly to supporting the work of HBS.
Ten-Minute Apologetics[edit]
Ten-Minute Apologetics is a resource provided by the Historical Bible society. It is a blog that addresses questions regarding evangelism, theology, and defending the Christian faith. Contributors to the blog are experts in their respective fields.
