HitGen Inc. (成都先导药物开发股份有限公司) is a biotechnology company headquartered in Chengdu, China. HitGen has established a drug discovery research platform for small molecules and nucleic acid drugs centred on the design, synthesis and screening of DNA encoded chemical libraries (DELs), fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD) and structure-based drug design (SBDD) technologies.
History
HitGen was founded in 2012, initially focusing on the development and application of DEL technology to significantly increase the molecular diversity for the screening of new chemical leads or hits to interact with new drug targets. Since then, HitGen has formed partnerships with a majority of the world's top 20 pharmaceutical companies, including Merck and Janssen, as well as over 100 biotechs and research foundations to help advance their drug discovery projects on an exclusive basis.[1][2][3][4][5][6] In addition to these external collaborations, HitGen has a number of assets within their own internal drug development pipeline, several of which have reached early stage clinical trials. These include, HG146, a Class I/IIb-selective HDAC inhibitor for multiple myeloma and selected solid tumour indications, and HG030, a second-generation TRK inhibitor, also for solid tumour indications. Both are currently in Phase 1 clinical trials, alongside HG381, an IV injectable STING agonist that leverages innate immunity to fight cancer.[7][8][9][10]
In 2018, CDH Investments led a 250M RMB ($39M) Series B round in HitGen.[11] In April 2020, HitGen was the first company from Southwest China to list on the Shanghai Stock Exchange STAR Market.[6][12]
HitGen has a US subsidiary, HitGen Pharmaceuticals Inc., based in Houston, Texas and in December 2020 acquired Vernalis Research, a biotechnology company specialising in fragment-based and structure-based drug discovery,[13][14][15] based in Cambridge, UK.[16]
People
HitGen was founded by Jin Li, who currently serves as HitGen's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Li previously held global leadership positions at AstraZeneca.[7][11][17] The Chief Scientific Officer is Barry Morgan, who was previously a VP at GSK and SVP at Praecis Pharmaceuticals, where he was a primary inventor of DNA Encoded Library Technology.[18]
